I need new gear

  I desperately need new gear. My gear is so old it doesn't even match my primary skill set anymore. I'd estimate 2009 to be the last time I had a major overhaul to my stuff.
  
  Now I've recently come back to the game and there's so much new crap that despite having spent the last week digging around the wiki I still have no idea what to do.
  
  I want some good gear that will suit my play style:
  dishing out death with magic but being able to whip out dual swords if I need to. Also lots of solonogi so will at one point get singing and enduring melody ranked up to self-buff without changing to a musical instrument. I also like being able to handle a few hits, so I prefer light armor rather than clothing.
  
  Basically looking for these attributes: +crit, +magic attack (either directly or from int), and anything else that you think would help the above mentioned play style.
  
  For example I think the gloves I have (see bellow) are pretty good for when I pull out my swords, but can use a much better prefix enchant.
  
  I'm also not looking for absolute endgame stuff, I play pretty casual and will not spend the time and resources destroying 500 pieces of armor to get a godly enchant on it. Looking for reasonably accessible stuff, and shouldn't be too hard given that almost anything is an upgrade compared to what I have now.

  My single oldest piece of equipment, Made in the weeks following the release of Bangor.

  Well if you're a mage or like using magic as your main skillset I suggest focusing around magic enchants and items. I don't really know what the benefit to light armor is anymore considering you can wear 2 accessories with heavy armor now. You should either go with a trinity set (or at the least some mana reduction sets) or a hebona set for your physical equipment. Depending on which set, items, and enchants you choose you can also go with a heavy armor (IE: hebona set + heavy armor or mana reduction set via enchants+heavy armor). You'll get a lot more def/protection from heavy armor which will allow you to tank those heavy hits without having to use the now less than effective mana shield which would additionally cut your mana pool for attacks.
  
  Depending on how expensive or cheap you want to go, you could do a magic set like I have which is mostly just wil o wisp (prefix) + sprout enchants on everything (for a mage set) or if you wanted max damage for your swords, you'd have to find some more specific enchants like (for example) oblivion, butterfly(which would rely on mana shield usage), ecstacy(for critical), dexterity, and other possibilities.
  
  As far as hardcore gear, this topic seems to have quite a few endgame items/enchants and other good gear mentioned for various skillsets if you haven't already seen it.

  This is pretty old (before reforges and many new enchants), this is also an archer build, but you could replace the accessories with either magic crafted int or str based accessories and enchant them with say... oblivion earthquake or something to that effect for damage with your swords, alternatively you could get fixed which is a pretty good enchant for mage accessories since it can give 3 crit each + giving you a little bit towards a mana reduction set which leaves you up for picking different equipment in other slots (IE heavy armor). You could do similar armor enchants if you like light armor, darkness is still pretty good on heavy armor these days I think and isnt too hard to get. The gloves are still pretty valid for what you're looking for as are the shoes (maybe use butterfly or ecstasy for a suffix depending on if you want higher crit or dmg, you could use musicians for a prefix if you want an easier one to get), helmet is pretty valid too except you could use blunt or vine for an easier prefix (or stiff on your current hat)

  - I guess I prefer to give an idea on what you should get rather than listing exactly what you should get. It will generally come down to preference and what you'd rather spam to get what.

  So much infos.
  I think I'm going to make a stiff dexterity helmet. I looked into vine instead of stiff but the -20 luck negates the extra 4 crit that it has compared to stiff.
  So I'll put that on a good helmet. Then I'll try and figure out the other pieces of armor.
  
  I liked it better when a good set of armor was fox giant everything.

  Critical is effectively a garbage statistic. However, there are a few easily accessible options out there which will ease your character development.
  
  Magic is barely influenced by enchants, so opt for max damage or mana reduction enchants instead. The only equipment which would have any sort of noticeable influence on your magic output would be the Rosemary Gloves.
  
  Assault is a r9 Suffix (Enchant enabled rank regardless) which gives +8% critical and can be enchanted on Clothes, Armors, Gloves, and Shoes. Royal Guard's can be enchanted on Clothes, Armors, Gloves, and Shoes and is a r7 Prefix (rank regardless) which gives 20 HP, 20 MP, and 8~15 INT.
  
  Camo is a decent max damage alternative, so look into it.

  if you primarily use magic, cast speed reforge is the most cost effective and efficient DPS spike you can get from gear

  as a mage, I say use heavy armor. You can achieve a mana reduction set by using karis shoes, broad feather hat, and mana witch on something else or the equip listed. as for magic, get a savage icewand for sexy icespear+blaze, and get r1 blaze too. and use a lance too, dual wielding swords is old and busted.
