It's becoming increasingly difficult to obtain enough AP to master all of the skills in Mabinogi. While there are no true "classes" in Mabinogi, it's far more efficient to specialize in one area of the combat system. Not to mention that certain "builds" are restrictive when it comes to weapon selection and enchant variety (ie: Archers need critical/damage/dex, Knights need strength/damage).
Excluding transformation/transformation skills, skills that primarily resemble life skills and skills that evenly contribute to all builds (Critical, Spirit Weapon Awakening, etc) here's a rough breakdown of skills that belong to each "class". Feel free to correct the list.
Melee - Current (10)
Combat Mastery
Smash
Windmill
Charge
Counterattack
Defense
Evasion
Final Hit (Human)
Taunt (Giant)
Wind Guard (Giant)
Melee - Future (4)
Sword Mastery
Axe Mastery
Blunt Mastery
Down Attack
Ranged - Current (9)
Magnum Shot
Support Shot
Ranged Attack (Human)
Arrow Revolver (Human)
Ranged Attack (Elf)
Mirage Missile (Elf)
Final Shot (Elf)
Throwing Attack (Giant)
Stomp (Giant)
Ranged - Future (1)
Crash Shot
Magic - Current (14)
Magic Mastery
Meditation
Icebolt
Lightning Bolt
Firebolt
Ice Spear
Thunder
Fireball
Blaze
Natural Magic Shield
Magic Ice Shield
Magic Lightning Shield
Magic Fire Shield
Mana Shield
Magic - Future (6)
Bolt Composer
Magic Bolt Mastery
Magic Ice Mastery
Magic Lightning Mastery
Magic Fire Mastery
Hailstorm
Alchemy - Current (12)
Alchemy Mastery
Barrier Spikes
Flame Burst
Frozen Blast
Life Drain
Mana Crystallization
Rain Casting
Sand Burst
Shock
Summon Golem
Water Cannon
Wind Blast
Alchemy - Future (7)
Chain Cylinder
Heat Buster
Alchemy Fire Mastery
Alchemy Earth Mastery
Alchemy Air Mastery
Alchemy Water Mastery
Alchemy Trasmute Mastery
In your opinion, what's the best skill set to focus on currently and in the future? (Note: I'm excluding "support" since designated healers/bards naturally wouldn't be able to solo anything)
What has the greatest potential?

I'd say Stomp is Melee :P

I'm sure this has been said many, Many, MANY times before but the best build is the one your most familiar with. With the way all these skills are set up, you can choose to either specialize in one area or branch out and you'd still have enough power to take care of most dungeons without too much trouble. So in the end, it really depends on the person's play style. If someone wants to be a pure melee character, they'll focus more on melee skills. If they want to become a pure archer, they'll focus on ranged skills. So it really depends on what the player wants to train.

Alchemist is completely crazy with those new cylinders for them...

Mages are pretty strong solos if you are far enough into the game(4k+). Mid-game though(1k-2k), I think Melee has the best potential, but it heavily depends on gear.

Kinda makes me mixed that alchemists don't really need good gear to do endgame damage...

Alchemy isn't something you can just sign up and be proficient in. I don't know any person with R1 AM that doesn't already have something else they used before Alchemy.

I mean you can main in alchemy without being 100% proficient in another type of combat.
Plus it's really hard (impossible) to get r1 AM without magic anyway. (yours or another's)

If they remove the stat cap, then technically, ranged has a huge and growing advantage with dexterity.

Well depends on AP to a point. Certain builds have advatages.
Magic Current AP to capp All Skills = 2644 Human giant and 2744 Elf
Future Skills as of g13 + 1020 AP
Alchemy Skills Current Ap to Capp all skills = 2800
Future Skills as of g13 + 1192 AP
Range Current AP to capp All Skills = 569 Human 58 giant and 1065 Elf
Future Skills as of g13 + 490
Melee Current AP to capp All Skills = 1594 Human 1824 giant and 985 Elf
Future Skills as of g13 + 672
I would have to pick magic and Alchemy as the 2 skills I like the most....Needs like 8k+ AP.
Of course this does not include the lifeskills people want especially for rangers.

Alchemy is what im focusing on.
My next goals when G12 comes out, is Chain Cylinder and Heat Buster, Heat Buster taking the Highest Prioity, being the trump card for ANY alchemist.

Melee will definitely have the most potential if you are a human/giant. Range has most potential if you are an elf.
Magic is good, but it will require you to have a mana pot source, which maybe easy for some people, and much harder for others.
Alchemy seems like a support skill for now although some people do just use only alchemy.
I would choose to be a Mabinogian class, which is basically have all stuff to r1 (or r1 skills all over the place), which isn't far from now at all for me.

Whats your total level cause I'm like 7k Ap short of that myself.

Interesting results thus far. I expected magic to at least tie for first place although alchemy was a nice surprise.
When I last played (g10) it seemed as if most of the average level players used melee and range while all of the high levels used melee and magic.
