While you don't need Windmill Rank 1, it's still helpful to have it for the increased range and etc. It's helpful for when an enemy is too close and you want to push them back then shoot them. Of course, you don't need to get it immediately since -CP Equipment is abundant nowadays. Just get the money for something like Abysmal in the future and you shouldn't need to worry too much.

@Ego Bows
What? level 30 str/50 luck for a person starting out? Have you guys ever try getting ANY ego stats to level 50?
Anyways, for elves, WM isn't very important at all. You can always just ignore/put it off till later when your range skills are decent. As for refine, it isn't the end of the world if you rank Range to near r1 before starting on refine. There are equipments that gives -dex and furances that gives -5% success rate.
You don't need 0 dex to get from rF to r2 with mythrils fails done although it helps.
Starting to raise one once you get a decent income is pretty smart though, since endgame they really help.

Didn't expect this many responses in short time, thanks a lot to all of you. Greatly appreciated, has helped put me at ease and prioitize some things. I suppose I'm worrying a little too much about maximizing my skill ranks ASAP.
How difficult is it to maintain an Ego/Spirit weapon? What would a "decent income" be when considering to start obtain and raise one, I've read on some threads that they take "jewels" to keep up their happiness. Are these jewels that I might come across during Metallurgy?

Basically, having you're ego out makes it Happy to Fine to Unhappy to Mad.
You can feed your ego pretty much anything, one of the most common things to feed them, is Jewels or Equipment, however....
That's why you might see (At any time) Five or so people crowded around the weapon shop
Starting from Level 21 Social, your Spirit (Thingy inside the weapon) flies on out, and, well "KAPEWKAPEWS" to monsters, generally it looks pretty badass, and it can inflict some nice damage, i think when my ego crit, it can hit 1000 upwards? (Not sure =/)
An ego can also be feed/maintained just from monsters drops, but if you really want stabalised character growth, i'd recommend buying Equipment/Gems
Personally, since my ego's reached 22Soc/30Str Gems seem horrible to me (Strength and Social rewarding gems) so i just spam Composite bows...
An ego is a personal choice, but once you hit those higher spirit stat levels, it pays off.
You can out damage higher level elves/humans (Up to a certain point)
Jewels come from Metallurgy spots, Wiki has a table up there, what gems for what beach, what day, ect
And i'm not sure of a decent income, because i don't have one :D
But it shouldn't be that high of a priority.

If you really don't want to do wm now, just wait for g13 and choose the melee class because class corresponding skills rank twice as fast.

Work on your Equip first you can always get an ego but it's not worth using it :S "decent income" 10m+ but well it's more important to finish your equip before spending all your money on your ego

You dont have to spend all you're money.
And i wouldn't worry too much about making awesome armour, until you've gotten R1 Defense or so

Awesome Armor =/= Defense
DMG Equips > Defense
My favorite armors are Ancient Darkness and Principle Darkness
Ancient Darkness -3 Def +11-27 Max DMG +20Luck(4% crit)+Title of your choice and Principle Darkness with Crit Master Title -8 def -5 prot 18% crit 7-17 Max DMG
and anyway you don't need def if you can 1 hit kill

Personally, I'd say you're better off being a human archer. Start by ranking refine to r1 before anything else though, but WM is not necessary to max, whatever anyone tells you. I'm perfectly happy as a (mostly) pure archer with just r9 WM for load speed.

First advice... don't do metallurgy and production mastery on an alt; that's a waste of time. You're going to want the stamina from both on your main anyway, and the dex. Just work on them on your main (put production mastery off til after refine though).
Once you play for awhile, you'll find that even with the higher ap costs of elven range skills, you're going to eventually get them all to rk1. While refine, weaving, and other life skills will certainly keep you busy for a long while training, you'll start to find yourself with an abundance of ap if you limit yourself to pure range alone.
I would suggest being more open to the idea of longer term character growth than that. Combat Mastery, if nothing else, will add some dex (+10 at rk1). But it will also form an undeniable trend towards being more melee hybrid. Rk1 CM+WM+Crit forms the core of most melee builds anyway, so you're not that far from it. Add in some smash and charge, and you have a more rounded out and flexible character.
Magic is also very useful. Getting a fast bolt (lightning or ice, lighting does more damage but creates conflict with popular stiff enchants) will let you stun things after a miss, to let you keep firing. Firebolt is just plain amazing. All of these can be used with a bow equipped, not really hampering your archery at all. For an elf, Ice Spear is an incredibly attractive skill to dabble in. It costs a lot of ap, but requires little to nothing else in terms of other skills ranked up to support it (like how ranged needs a ton of dex skills and crit), and mana cost reduction for an elf is icing on the cake.
Alchemy also offers some skills that are very attractive to an archer. Barrier spikes can offer some security, while golem can offer some powerful melee options for very little ap cost.
Even if you are really determined to be a "pure" archer, get some of these other skills. Much like how life skills give you dex to directly boost your damage, things like bolt spells and barrier spikes enhance your archery and make it more powerful.

I can say from experience, be it with human or elf archer, bolt spells become pretty useless to you after you have number rank range skills.
It takes an elf 1065 AP to max their ranged skills right now. Ranged Attack, Mag, Mirage, and then FS. After G12, it will cost them 1735 from Support Shot and Crash Shot. This is not counting AP from Critical Hit or Windmill, or any of your other life skills which are necessary to achieve ideal dex-based damage.
So when you say you'll find yourself 'with an abundance of ap if you limit yourself to pure range alone.' I feel like calling you insane. That 1735 AP doesn't even make you an end-game ranged elf-- It just gets you good ranged skills without damage.

+9 AP for beginner quests, up to killing king connous lizard (all easily doable for a beginning elf) (also not to mention a crapton of exp).
+7 AP for startign at age 17
=16 AP first life
+6 AP for aging three times reaching age 20 for free RB.
+14 AP for reaching explore level 15 (easy, conservative goal, higher explore levels can be achieved at any total level, since combat prowess not really a factor)
+34 AP for level 35 (again fairly conservative, will get higher with higher total levels)
=54 AP each life.
Since G12 isn't too far off, lets go ahead and include support shot+crash shot. Assuming you never actually level more than that, that is only 32 (rounded up) rebirths, or 96 weeks, or almost two years. While that certainly is a long time, never leveling more than the above is pretty ridiculously unreasonable an estimate.
Getting to total level 100 bumps the exp you can gain from shadow missions, so around your fourth-fifth life you could easily start seeing great increases in AP gains. You should already have all your basic "leave at rkF because you need them" skills out of the way by then, and be well on your way to having enough damage output and aimspeed to handle Intermediate mobs. Increase level each life to 40 if you want to be conservative, though I think 45 is pretty reasonable.
5 more lives either way for total 300, and adv. missions where the bulk of the grinding will take place. At adv missions, lvl 50-55 seems pretty reasonable.
Basic
5x54+16= 286 (5 lifes+create+newbie)
Intermediate
5x64+286= 606
16x74+606= 1790 in 26 rebirths, or about a year and a half.
Of course, spending a little but of money and rebirthing with a card even infrequently will cut that time down by a lot. Hitting higher totals each life (especially with the extra conservative exploration I figured in, Less than a year is pretty feasible. While a year may seem like a long time to some kids... for a game like mabi, where you're going to need to spend a pretty long time playing anyway... I wouldn't call my assessment insane at all.
I don't fully agree on bolt spells being useless. I party with archers and maybe it is a style preference, but I see lightning bolts fired off after missed shots not uncommonly. I'm by no means saying it's required, just a useful option.
Those 6 skills alone give +167 Dex, +66.8 damage above level/age/bow/enchants. Not what I would call "no damage."
Certainly lifeskills are highly desired, but as I stated: If you have all of your ranged skills trained, and are working on nothing but lifeskills, you will have surplus AP (assuming by then you adopt a similar pattern to many others of 'grind off enough levels/explore to satisfy you for the life, train lifeskills, fill the extra time with whatever'). Lifeskills AP costs are typically lower than combat skills, but with much higher/more tedious training methods. While you will find many lives at first you have far less AP than you want to spend, once you hit rk1 in all your relevant combat skills, you'll be making more AP than you spend.
I note from your profile you're total level 700. I suppose the AP costs at that point seem daunting, but coming from someone with well over 1.7k total levels, hanging out with over 2k total archers... no, it is not even close to insane.

just stick with r9 WM for the faster loading time, and if your using it constantly then maybe go to 1, but in my opinion r9/r5 on an elf archer is all your going to need. And Elf range skills don't give the most dex, so refining is definintly a must. If you want to you could easily get r9 WM, then go for r1 ranged and use your -dex set to make your dex 0, while still being fairly powerful.
Also buying ores isn't out of the question. Just do mostly iron when you refine and sell the ingots, this makes it so you don't lose nearly as much money as you would keeping all the iron ingots (though when you start getting into the r5 range your going to need to hoard those iron ingots for iron plates)
