I did a test for how much mp is used by mana shield with different M.Attack, defense and protection.
This test is done in Math normal Dungeon. And damage is done by Gray Town Rat.
The armor that I am using is Color Pirate Chinese Dragon Armor
The Shield that I am using is Kite Shield
Without armor and shield those rats only hit me with 1hp and crit rate is about 1/20.
------My Stats------
Race: Human Female
STR 271
INT 308
DEX 332
Will 294
Luck 59
-----------------------
rank 8 mana shield
rank 1 light armor mastery
rank 1 shield mastery
Test 1 (No Shield and Armor)
M.Attack 59 Def 35 Protection 0 M.Def 37 M.Protection 14
Crit hit rate is about 1/20
MP used about 8 (did not that crit hit into account)
Test 2 (No Shield but wear Armor)
M.Attack 59 Def 57 Protection 10 M.Def 45 M.Protection 17
Crit hit rate 0
MP used about 5
Test 3 (Wear Shield and Armor)
M.Attack 59 Def 80 Protection 20 M.Def 55 M.Protection 21
Crit hit rate 0
MP used about 1
Test 4 (No Shield nor Armor, but with a savage fire wand to increase M.attack)
M.Attack 115 Def 37 Protection 0 M.Def 37 M.Protection 18
Crit hit rate 1/20
MP used about 4
Conclusion: Seem like defense and protection also have impact on mana shield and the crit rate as well. However according to wiki "Mana Shield does not take the player's Defense, Protection, and Magic Protection into calculation."
Open question: What do you people think? Is that something wrong with this test ?

Pretty much everything on the wiki regarding recent changes to formulas (pretty much everything changed in the enlightenment patch) is inaccurate because of how complex all that shit is now. I don't think there's anything wrong with your tests because my friend also did some tests and found that the formula for mana shield efficiency on the wiki is completely wrong.

You're missing one thing in that quote, and that might be your answer, judging but the numbers I'm seeing. Magic Defense seems to play as the MP spent correlates to your M.DEF according to your data. You may wanna play with bigger numbers though to see more variance. Try a wolf and try to get your statsto 0 via Pot Poison so it'll drop your STR and INT and Will to 0 and by extension all those defensive stats.
Also what rank Mana Shield?

No offense, but testing on a rat won't be really effective in determining "efficiency", since you'll probably have a greater drain of using MS (I think it was ~0.5 MP/sec?) than you'll get when you actually get hit by the rat. For me, I get hit 1's even if I'm completely naked.
If you really wanted to test "efficiency", you should go to a Hardmode mission and test those same situations. I say this because the damages are greater, perhaps into the hundreds, and it's easier to determine damage ratios based on whether or not you were wearing armor or not.
Aka, if 10 damage was reduced by 10%, it would be 9--a value that's really hard to pinpoint as a "difference".
However, if 100 was reduced by 10% to 90, then you'd probably know that there was some factor that reduced the damage.
Good theory though. I might go about trying this sometime as well if I'm bored out of my mind

I believe someone recently tested this using either the White Dragon or the Black Dragon's breath attacks (which always deal a fixed amount of damage [100]).
I'm not sure how long ago that was, though.
Edit: Aha, here's some:

I can confirm at least that the reforge is crap.
