(First off one thing was on my mind while making and choosing my Human character to be a TANK!!)
So I had just started yesterday (from over 3 years ago starting allover again) and as I was going through the beginning this option suddenly came up "CHOOSE" which destiny ACES or MILLETIAN?!?!?!
After seeing this I was sitting there thinking (what is this? when was this here? which one does what?).
Then I stopped the game and went to searching the internet, only to come up with very little info :gloom3:.
But then I came across a question where someone asked what is the difference between the two and from what I can gather everyone was saying that choosing the aces is the best way to go, SO I did!!! without realizing you had to choose again 3 choices of mentors :fail: (beck to the internet LOL).
After looking up what each one was Music, Magic, Alchemist.....I went with Alchemist (title of the forum obviously). As I was Training I started to realize that I'm staying pretty for away from the enemy while in combat. After the training was done I opened my inventory and saw the Alchemist Gun......I was :!!:
So now I'm thinking how am I to be a TANK if I'm a Alchemist Gun user :worry:
So can a Alchemist be a Tank???
PS. sorry for the lengthy story (and for the emotes....they are fun to mess with) I wanted everyone to know exactly where I stand at this point and how I got there.

well I mean tropa's a good example, alchs can be SOMEWHAT tanky but theyre damage comes from clothing sets/ guard cylinders soo, to a degree yes they can be. Nothing like RK armor with r1 Heavy armor mastery though

This game isn't about tanking, but Alchemists can indeed tank later-game when you have high Health, Strength and rank 1 Shield Mastery.

No such thing as tank class in Mabinogi.
Really though, to be a real "tank", you'll need end game stats in general.

actually its the other way around not a tank as a class but a class that is better fit as a tank (a class that is normally better at taking hits, taking aggro, meanwhile the team is taking out the enemy), after watching Tropa's videos he has on Battle Alchemists guide I fear I picked the wrong one these Alchemists seem more of a mage playing type then a tanky type.
I was looking for more of like your sword and shield type with high def and resistance, like I said I only picked Alchemists because ACES are what everyone recommended on a post.

Ironically, Alchemists are one of the best classes that manipulates aggro, instead of drawing in aggro.
Instead f being a "tank" you should be hindering their movements/aggro instead of getting hit.
The way aggro works in this game, that type of game play isn't viable.

Giants get the most "Defensive stats" in the game, but your wayyyy better off trying to kill the monsters before they even lay a finger on you.

Yes, even Giants.
Remember how there are mobs that will do damage ignoring your stats? That's exactly why traditional tanking can't work.
The point of this game is to not get hit. That's really all you need to know.

First of all, tanks aren't incredibly useful because players can avoid damage while doing 100% of their damage, which makes the current metagame based around as much damage as possible.
Second, there are expendable tanks in cloud pets, puppets, and golems which can attract aggro if need be and be re-summoned quite easilt.
But yes, you can build a tank with an alchemist if you truly wanted to. In fact, alchemist tanks may be tankier than their warrior counterparts given that they gain hp from the elemental wave meter, and can still equip armor and accessories (vales shield giants are a different story though)

I would build a melee giant with a vales shield + 2H sword build. Vales shield + shield mastery + defense reduces even a meteor to 1 damage.
Taunt and windguard may be situationally useful too, but those are both giant-only

in other words (following this thread)
You CAN be tanky, but that will last till HM shadow missions, and MAYBE some elite missions
Lord missions and such (in the case you don't know basic<int<adv<Hard mode<Elite<Lord) won't let you tank as you wish, yet it will HELP you to survive most of the time, but tank =/= survive, sadly.
Also, keep in mind that in order to tank, you will need a good amount of STR and WILL, both AP demanding.

Rydian wrote on 2014-03-26 15:30
As a melee user, I naturally have a bit of bulk to me now since STR adds to defense, and I've worked somewhat on it too.
Rank 1 heavy armor mastery with heavy armor on, +def and +prot titles (primary and secondary), R1 defense.
Went into Peaca Abyss. King Red Ghost was coming towards me. Used defense.
1,100+ damage. Instantly 100% wound and in deadly.

Blassreiter wrote on 2014-03-26 16:44
Defense without a shield is basically useless against hard hitting Peaca Abyss enemies. Using a shield greatly reduces damage but the million dollar question is, how much? All I know is that Vales Shield reduces everything to 1 damage (save for OHKO skills like Duke's), and Medium Shields and perhaps Small Shields as well reduce around 50% damage even against Smash if Defense is loaded with a shield equipped.
But of course the goddamned meta is Lance or uninstall Mabi so no one dares to use a shield, unless you're a jeeant [S]or a Casualreiter[/S]
