What are the odds that this is just some April fool's joke gone horribly awry? I want to believe, at this point.

Look at the real picture, doods. It really isn't that big of a deal (aside from the fact that the deal is worth $2 billion--it's a manner of speech!)
Facebook paid $400 million in cash and the rest of it in FB shares. They know full well that this technology is driven by enthusiasm from the gaming industry, and they won't risk sh***ing on their own big investment for short term gain. Nobody is gonna buy an expensive VR headset for the purposes of looking at ads, and Facebook knows this.
It's not the first time that that Minecraft dude is acting like a child. Nobody takes him seriously. I imagine the fans will just make mods for it to support VR.

My first reaction to this was that I found it rather annoying and disappointing. After thinking about it for a bit, I realized it probably won't be an issue--at least not for the near future. If anything, the extra capital would help Oculus compete with whatever Sony is gonna launch. Oculus will stay independent for now and keep doing what they do best, and by the time FB's crap starts leeching into it, the 3D VR industry might take off and we'll have competitors to choose from.
Actually, Valve partnered with Oculus. The improvements in the latest Crystal Cove, which were then integrated into the 2nd version of the dev kit they just released, were thanks to the work Valve has done--namely with the low-persistence (blur-free) display tech.

Someone had to do it.
The world ends with this.

Just heard that mojang/notch are dropping their project to make a occulus compatible minecraft because of this deal.
Notch hates facebook.
Of course that isn't going to stop mod makers, I've heard that there are mods out there already that do this and a good chunk of minecraft is the modding community so no big loss there.

It's already happening:

I have no strong feelings one way or the other on this. I rarely use facebook but see it's value in keeping touch with family, although I wouldn't trust it with any sensitive data I wouldn't mind the world knowing. Haven't bought an Occulus Rift and not that invested in the whole VR movement, I'm just sitting here and waiting. Playing it safe and waiting for the technology to mature and develop before I dive right in.

Oculus Rift's goal isn't just video games. It's Virtual Reality.
Virtual Reality that is made for a large audience.
Facebook has more power than any game company in the world and they pull the audience quite well.
Mutual benefits
Oculus Rift gets the money needed for R&D and manufacturing.
Facebook expands beyond facebook.com
Cons:
Lower standard of quality needed to satisfy consumers.

In the best case this is just facebook diversifying its business without messing with OR very much. No point in speculating what they'll do, facebook doesn't exactly have a history of buying technology to draw any conclusions from.

Facebook bought Oculus rift when their stock was valued higher
Only $400,000 of the $2 billion was in cash.
They bought Oculus rift at a discount.
