I hadn't prepared for the siege; we had no military might to speak of aside from a couple trained attack dogs which were quickly eliminated by the hoard. I had no choice but to call everyone inside and lock down the fortress or they would have been slaughtered.
Unfortunately this safety precaution stopped them from completing some of their jobs, and with nothing to do they sat around the fortress all day drinking and eating to drown their boredom. With this increased consumption the supplies that should have lasted until the next caravan arrived were gone in a matter of days and that's when it all started.
I tried to dig a well out so that they could at least have water, but it ended up flooding the lower floors, drowning some and blocking off all access to their private rooms. With no food, no drinks, and no sleep it was only a matter of time before things began to break down. It started with a single dwarf at first, driven insane by the lack of food and sleep he struck out and murdered one of his family right in the middle of the dining hall. The others who witnessed this act banded together to dispatch the lunatic, but all these acts of violence only caused the effect to ripple outward. Soon another had gone mad. Then two more. Then ten. Before I knew it the entire fortress had gone pants-on-head crazy and were brutally murdering each other. In the end there was a lone dwarf child, wandering the empty halls of the fortress while talking to himself and eating the corpses of the fallen until the vengeful spirits returned from the beyond and began to haunt him, eventually killing him.
Don't worry. This loss won't keep me down. I'll build another fortress. A better fortress. A Dwarf Fortress.
