What's the difference between light and heavy armor? (Clothing?)

There is no reason to go cloth anymore unless you're after a specific set effect (bohemian, mp reduction, alchemy boost)

For highest damage, encore champion is the best option and can only go on Gamyus which is light armor.

Heavy armor is focused on def/prot, at the cost of 50% dex penalty to elves, 35% to humans, 10% to giants. The thames is a very good set since it gives smash set bonus.

Personally I would go with light armor since I play a human puppeteer/bard/gunner. However all giants should go heavy armor!

Heavy armor is much more defensive than light, but it has a big dexterity penalty and also penalties for the fighter skillset.
None of that applies to a mage though.

You should read up about Equipment Combination Effects. Mages often wear Clothing that gives Mana Usage Reduction.

For the bodypiece you're free to choose pretty much anything you want. If you're going to be using pure mage, then by all means use armor. I would suggest using Royal Knight Armor (http://wiki.mabinogiworld.com/view/Royal_Knight_Armor) if you can afford it. This is my personal recommendation.

The other option would be to use Karis or some other mana reduction piece for the set effect -10% mana cost. However you don't really need to use clothing bodypiece to achieve this, you may simply want to use Kari's shoes and a couple mana reduction enchants (http://wiki.mabinogiworld.com/view/Other_Modifiers#Mana_Cost_Reduction). I personally do this, and once they fix transmutation talent (which adds mana reduction points) you can get mana reduction even easier.
