IMO, it's pretty much the same thing as being pure magic.
Alchemy and Magic damage is pretty much predetermined (Int adds almost nothing, and 100% balance is easily attained).
Both require a non-effective weapon to get full usage (Cylinder, Wand).
Both are ranged skills which can be pre-loaded and stacked to deal instant damage, and have always-knockback properties (Firebolt, Windblast).
Both have to carry many supples (MP, Crystals). Both can be costly to maintain comfortable amounts.
Where mages can use swords and still dish out bolts, alchemists win by having golems. Therefore mages win in ease, but alchemists win in power.
Advanced Magic can be relatively compared to Flame Burst in early-to-mid game. Here, alchemists win in ease (speed, AP cost) but mages win in power.
So yea. Easily possible, but would probably be annoying.
