This looks fun though...!!
Yeah... but after Dragon Nest most MMO combat just seem like old women handbag slapping... well DFO is just as good but not much else.

I am not hating your game specifically lol, just MMOs with lackluster combat in general.

I'm usually pretty rough on MMOs especially when it comes to combat system and this one looks better than most!

I got to lvl 25 during the beta and did the first dungeon as a medic healer. The devs basically have already stated that they would rather kill the game than see it go free to play. Over all it's a fun game and has a pretty good learning curve. I'm not sure where people are getting point and click from, you have to aim your spells/heals etc in order for them to land.

The way I see it, the game's going to attract and deter several audiences with a number of factors from the get-go:
1. Art style and general design direction
2. Subscription Model
3. Combat Mechanics
4. Distribution of content across PVP and PVE
If it's going to nail it for you in most factors, then it's probably going to be a blast. If not, I guess it's just not your cup of tea. The game does have quite an expansive world with lore backed to go with it, and I'm mainly interested in that too.
The combat from what I experienced in beta makes you feel powerful, unlike say Guild Wars 2 which has a similar combat system due to lack of level adjustments and the need to aim/dodge skills half the time. Dragon Nest, while it had a great combat system, felt quite repetitive with the grind and the instanced dungeons. This is essentially open world, so that's something to consider here as well.

I played through the non-imperial faction's starting zone and I got to say, there are better intros than this. Looking back at the starting quests for SWTOR often you get really invested in it. Better yet Blade and Soul's opening is one of the most intense game intro I ever played. You are just rammed into a series of events, and come out with loads of questions and emotions.
Wildstar's opening isn't as good. I mean a guy looking for his wife's cryo pod... why am I helping him? Why does he need me? This is the problem with most MMO questiing, people ask you to do stuff and the game doesn't really give you incentive to do them other than for the sake of its reward... I think that was the most disappointing part about this MMO for me, the world they created is very interesting, but compare to the world your personal story is terribly dull. I hear some people say it gets better later but a good MMO would've grabbed your attention from the get go.
I mean, even maplestory has some better openings than this.
Remember this? Phantom's story started out just epic, they mucked it up along the way but for a little while all heroes have pretty epic stories (cept Evan caz fk that guy right? Everyone else gets cool story, he gets a copy paste version of Aragon.)

Wildstar's basis on the openings for both factions is that your character is essentially a loyal follower to the faction he/she is in. Hence they took him/her out of cyro-stasis either out of accident/extra hands or out of previous records not reinstated before in your past character's life. Helps with developing the setting of being many Exiles/Dominion(players) running about, because they can just pop one out from their cyro-stasis pods. Sure it might not be the best way to develop an opening introduction, but it does solve the issue of introducing an entire populace of players into a planet. Of course, it does make your main character feel like a blank silent protagonist that helps everyone without much purpose.
I'll agree that the Exile introduction wasn't the best. They could have done so much more with the Gunslinger and his wife, but they dumped their little story past the level 5 quests or so. If anything, I feel as if the developers were focusing on creating the cultures behind the Exiles and Dominion, taking you to locations that emphasized how each faction was like across their spaceship. The Dominion felt very regal and very classy throughout the tutorial, while the Exiles felt rag-tagged and rebellious, like each faction was built up to be.
Maplestory had non-existent character-development UNTIL they started releasing specific characters as classes(and plopped in an antagonist, the Black Mage). The Explorers in Maplestory are as comparable as the player characters in Wildstar. The Heroes have their own story-line and their own background already set.

Oh when I said heroes I meant the hero classes, the five legend (six in korea now).
I just don't think Wildstar really has what it takes to remain p2p. It's not a established brand, its gameplay while good is not the best, its story is mediocre... Even games like SWTOR couldn't make it and it was a really good game even now. Unless they got something really exciting planned on release I just don't see it.
So for people who want to play this game, I would still suggest wait until it's free to play, I give it 2 years top.

I feel it's unfair to compare a past rendition of a game to a new game.
All of the MMOs on the market would die an hilarious death if they were released NOW with what the had before, like releasing maplestory NOW with content prior to big bang.
Which is why it's nice seeing korean and american companies work together to make patches faster, else they risk the content being outdated when it hits america.
But on the topic of wildstar, the dev entries were absolutely hilarious.

I don't think that last bit was as clear as it should have been. TLC was making a statement on how the character you played in Wildstar should have a storyline that was on the same scale, differentiation, and uniqueness as the Maplestory Heroes, which were essentially set characters with pre-set archetypes, background, lore, and features. To compare these two feels unfair given that one already has a template with customizable features, while the other is literally a blank slate with the player able to decide the aspects of what he/she wants to do with his/her character. If anything, the Explorers in Maplestory are like the player character in Wildstar; nameless, looking to strike it big by exploring the untamed wilds of Nexus. Sure, the devs could have been able to write a story that's far more engaging in the beginning, but comparing the story to a set one... I don't know.

Newer MMO's should stop trying to look like WoW.

It is possible to remain a blank while have an engaging story. I don't really identify with my character in B&S, but the events transpired are closely related to my character anyway.

I'm being dragged into this MMO by a bunch of old high school friends next week. I'm kind of nervous, as I'm not that great with action-oriented MMOs (PSO being my entire experience). Any tips for a newbie?

Pace yourself, don't try to rush it.
