Going Alchemy

I've finally decided to move onto alchemy.

-Advice?
-Skill progression?
-What skills are useful and useless?
-Pre-alchemy stats? I have 962 HP, 634 MP, and 961 SP
-Pre-alchemy skills? I've ranked 1 all my combat and music skills and we all know I've mastered fighter, puppet, and gunner.
-Cylinder? All I have is a Rebis Guard.
-Other than Vates skills, do I really need Normal + Guard Cylinders?
