If it's ventilation problems then you might want to consider buying some compressed air sprayers. Have you ever cleaned your laptop's fans? There must be a lot of dust and gunk in there if it's been years.

It's easy enough. You gently take the laptop battery out and make sure nothing's plugged in. Then, take the bottle of compressed air and spray it in the open ventiliation areas of your laptop(should be on the sides and bottom). If you've never cleaned your fans in awhile, then a huge cloud of dust should spray out of the other holes. At the very least, it'll free up the areas within the fans, allowing it to ventilate.
Make sure to use 1-2 second bursts of compressed air. If the bottle starts getting cold, it's normal because of the chemical reactions associated with the bottle. Don't inhale or spray the air in your face though; that's not good.
Consider purchasing some sort of exterior fan as well to at least remove some of the heat your laptop is generating.

You can choke and die.
Well not really, but it's not healthy since it doesn't have the same distribution of elements and make-up normal air has. It wouldn't do good for your body. Gases spread outward it blends in with the rest of the normal air to where it just becomes normal air if you're worried about it being in a room.

also, splat has a cat or two, right?
cat hair can clog up fans and burn up too
that's what happened to a laptop i owned, dog hair got in the fans and clogged it up to where it won't even stay on for too long
