So, I'm getting my permit and picking up my now running car from the shop tomorrow, and I've been realizing that the thought of driving kind of scares me. I know all the rules, I've been a passenger for 23 years and I've even driven a little bit. But despite the fact that I 100% know what to do conceptually, the idea of actually doing it kind of scares me.
Is this normal or am I just weird? :gloom3:

Totally normal! I've known people who've gotten their license and then go on a road trip the next week or drive on the freeway like they've been doing it for years and I've known people who are still scared shitless of the freeway even after months of driving or always imagine the worst case scenario when in a car.
Everyone is different and learns and their own pace when driving so don't let it bother you too much. As long as you're prepared mentally you'll be fine and if you run into situations on the road where you aren't sure if you did the right thing or if you could have handled it better don't let it bother you too much, it happens to everyone when they're still learning so its best to get over it quickly and move on.
STAY SAFE

I would say it is irrational not to have at some fear at very least. If you just turn the wheel a bit you could end up killing several people and dying yourself. Just know the rules, be attentive, and drive safely. The fear will subside, but hopefully not fully.

Normal, I know a ton of people who hate it. I love it though and I am really into fast cars and nice brands. Really all driving is really is just being confident about your ability to drive, after that just drive.

Your inexperience is showing.
Once you get to around 100 hours behind the wheel, you'll be driving like a racer while texting and half asleep like the rest of us.

I hate driving.
I really do.
And I am writing this while resting between shifts on a team drive to Oklahoma and back. Over 1300 miles each way.
People are idiots out there on the road. They don't signal their turns, they make reckless moves, and all too often they'll bumrush you off the line and just about run you off the road cause you're too slow for their liking.
Be careful, and above all know what your ride is capable of so that in a situation you can choose the most efficient maneuver to escape.

I drive an 85 Cadillac. The most efficient maneuver to escape is plowing through the other car.
But really, very low maneuverability in a car this large so I'll just have to try not to screw up. Lol.

I never knew you were that young. Explains a lot.

Try bicycling downtown sometimes.

Not young, just poor. When your parents can't buy you a car like all the other kids in high school and you live so far out in the middle of nowhere that you can't walk to work, saving money for a car takes a while. And when the only person with a car is gone 12 hours a day there isn't much chance for practice to get a license.

I don't have a bicycle or a downtown to ride one in. But even if I did, no thanks. Doesn't sound pleasant at all. D;

I have been driving for... 2 years? I drive safely and have never had an accident, but I just don't like the feel of driving and am generally anxious or in a not as good mood when driving. I'm a bicycle commuter, and love riding my bike for the feel of agility, finesse, and efficiency. And of course, adrenaline and energy.

Yeah, I can't really bike anywhere. I mean, if I got money to buy a bike, bought one, and then learned how to ride it I -could- bike places. But it'd take a couple of hours and by the time I got there I'd be too tired to work. Lol. So I'll just have to learn to like driving I guess. Or learn to hate it and live with it.
