Yo', everyone.
I'm starting Mabinogi now after a loooong time. What I mean is I didn't play the game but spent so much time looking up stuff about it randomly when I feel like it to the point that I know a lot. Maybe not as much as an in-game player, but a lot. I don't know why this happened, I usually start right away.
Aaaanyway!
I would like to know what server to choose. I wish for a good community and a nice economy. I'm scared of Ruari for hackers but it is not off the list but Alexina is because I heard the lag is FUBAR and people mostly do fashion instead of leveling, not my cup of tea.
Please help a fellow out!
Iotae.

Well, Tarlach and Ruairi are always in need of new players, so you might want to look there. Although, if you are wanting more players, then Mari has a decent sized community and our economy is okay (nothing that selling Holy Water can't overcome).

As an Alexinian lvl 7.5k, I'd like to say that the Fashionogi's do Not own the server. I have little to no lag at all and I live on the east coast.
Alexina is almost always populated on every channel all day long. We have a wealth of player groups and diversity. You can find Hardcore combat addicts, E-peen lovers, Fashionogi's, Roleplayers and the like.
I personally see countless dozens camping the shadow missions and avon theater for martial arts tournament runs. PvP and EvG also occur very often in Alexina and for a time was one of the biggest deals.

Ruairi was known for hackers a long time ago but you rarely see any today. I'm pretty sure there's people who have the ability to hack on every server. Buuut for a small population ruairi has an active community, especially on weekends. There's guilds that are willing to help out new players. The economy is alright but it can be ridiculous with prices sometimes.

I know a couple people who switched from Alexina to Ruairi and they're pretty happy they made the switch. Depends on what you want out of your community though! There will be fewer endgame resources in smaller servers but with that comes less competition for them.

Ruairi's economy needs nuked. Everything in Ruairi is expensive. Some wings go for over 80m, for example. So if you come here you're going to have to work your ass off to have anything even semi-decent. The only channel that ever has more than a handful of people on it is the market channel, and that one has too many people on it so you get terribad lag in any populated area.
Can't speak for the other servers, haven't tried them.

I have played/play on all servers.
Tarlach, may be a smaller community but I have found that the playerbase there is really friendly. People are social and easygoing. They also have the Tarlach fair which is an event hosted by the community itself, that says something! The market probably is a bit more inactive than those on the other servers, so you are less likely to find someone selling something you are looking for, because the playerbase is a lot smaller. If you are looking for a smaller but friendly community and don't mind not being able to find sellers for items easily, then this is a good choice.
Ruari, it actually looks nicely populated to me, but it honestly depends on what you are looking for. Things are more expensive there but I have found that things in general are more expensive on Alexina as well compared to the other servers. So far people there seem friendly as well. Have had no problems making friends at all. If you like a smaller playerbase and don't mind to pay more for player sold items than on other servers this is a good choice. I also reckon if more people start to play on Ruari the prices may go down as well. Due to the smaller playerbase, I figure, items are more rare hence more expensive.
Alexina, I think based on my experience has the biggest playerbase. So far my experiences there have been pleasant. If you are looking for a large playerbase then this is your server, though yes, even if people said they have no lag on there, when I used to play on my old computer, I definitely lagged a lot more on Alexina than on other servers. Now with a new computer though I experience no difference. It's easy to mingle and make friends because there are usually plenty of people around, which is very nice. The market is very active and the prices are generally pretty reasonable too. If you want an active big playerbase with an active market with reasonable prices, and your computer can handle crowded places in game, this is a good choice.
Mari, this one is actually said to be the fashionogi server as far as I know. Personally though, I see plenty of users who really play the game for it's content and not just to dress up. They probably do enjoy dressing up next to it though, I mean, most users usually do walk around in fashion but there is nothing wrong with that, and as far as I can tell they also just play the game.
People do hang out a plenty too on Mari though, such as the fact that there are always people hanging out in Dunbarton, which seems the social gathering place. There are always people chatting and PVPing there which is, in my opinion nice. It's easy to mingle and make friends like that. I like the social aspects in online games, and just chatting and goofing around with others at times is quite fun. Mari has a nice playerbase though not as big as Alexina's. If you look for a large playerbase but without the risk of too much lag from the amount of players (if your computer is older) then this would be a better choice than Alexina based on that. Met my fair share of annoying people there though but I guess that can happen on any server. The market is very active as well and in my experience the prices are reasonable.
If you still don't know what would be a good choice, I would just reccomend to try out each server for a bit and then make a decision.

In any MMORPG, it is best to go with the highest population server. It usually means it has the best economic, and you can find more types of people there.
Avoid low population servers, especially in a game like Mabinogi where you can't switch servers after you started a character without completely starting over.
Even in high population servers, if you want to play alone, you still have the option to play alone. However, the option to do stuff with other people is much greater in high population servers than lower ones.
For extremely low population servers, you never know if Nexon is going to just axe it or not. It is Nexon afterall.

Thank you everyone so much for your answers. I've decided to play on Alexina as more people = more chance to meet different kinds of people. I really, really appreciate everyone's answers. It's funny how it was off the list at first.

I'd advise you to message a few Alexina people to get a general idea of which players/guilds to avoid, as well as scammers and such.

I've just reinstalled mabinogi and on the Alexina server. Add me - Kamisa - if you want to play together.
