I plan on going into Archery next. I'm interested in crossbows because nobody uses them. I realize their damage output and range is low or maybe utter garbage compared to bows but I just think they're unique. My backup talents would be Wise close combat and Master lance so I'll be using lance for my secondary. Is this the right path? What should I expect going into crossbows. I've got r1 of the basic skills like smash wm etc

Even as your back up, those talents should be master, as you'll dish out more damage in lances that way, not to mention better transition for puppet.
For crossbows, the damage isn't that big of a problem as much as its pathetic range. The reduced range makes you aim slower, and the worse part is you can't move when you have crash shot or magnum loaded. Only pro of using crossbow is running with AR loaded.
Just keep in mind that any weapon is good with great reforge. An ele 6 crossbow will always beat an ele 4 HLB.

Master close combat first before changing to archer talent. About crossbow: no. Just for looking unique, no. For the sniper title, yes!
I trained as well crossbow but changed asap back to bow after i got rank 1 crossbow mastery. Why? See the list of ironwoman.

The gun sound affect is fun. Running around with AR is fun, until you realise AR sucks. Aim speed is pretty annoying, but can be remedied by Effective Range reforges.
You'll probably want to enchant for Max damage as Crit is already really high with upgrades. And if you happen to have a Toy Crossbow, they don't change size when you transform, for maximum laughs.

Yeah as mentioned above, the purpose of using a crossbow was pretty much defeated since the genesis patch which introduced the instant skill loading system. In addition to that, crossbow was used in the past for its high critical - this was before they released the fighter talent. Now you can get massive amount of will and luck just by ranking other skills and therefore weapon critical rate is not that important anymore.
Also as December mentioned - AR is not that great comparing to the elf magnum spam, it is also very annoying to get the skill so choose wisely.

AR isnt bad honestly. I was using it and dealing 30k+ easy with combined hits. Its spammable and fast aim speed, as well as first hit having increased aim speed (at max range u can hit 100% aim in like half a second) and it has nice damage on it. Also comparing elf magnum to AR makes no sense since you cannot get AR on an elf anyways.

One thing to note about Crossbows vs bows is that crossbows have less range than bows. Magnum and Crashshot aiming speed depends on distance, and the longer the range you have the more aim speed you have within your aiming range. Which means magnum and CS aims faster with long ranged bows.
That's the main reason why people use bows over crossbows. Stun doesn't really matter, and you can load AR almost instantly anyways so no need to run around with it. To be honest crossbows aren't bad, but the aiming speed is what makes the difference.
Also note that if you want to go ranged, be sure to get ele reforge on bow and glove damage for (CS or magnum). Almost mandatory if you want to do decent damage with ranged.

Should I even consider archery seeing I don't have much dex to start with

No one has much anything to start with when they just start out on a skill tree. And, really, the best way to get more Dex is to rank up your Archery skills.
As for the Crossbows/Bows debacle, it all depends on what you want to do with your archery. If you want something with long-range and the ability to pick off enemies before they know you're there, Bows are for you. If you prefer ranged attacks with ample amounts of mobility and the ability to run circles around enemies while peppering them with projectiles, Crossbows are a good fit.

That's like saying doing melee would be a stupid idea because you have low strength...
You have to build the stats as you go on. You expect to start at 700 dex or something?
Yes, you should consider archery. Archery is a very good skillset to have, if not for damage (and it has very powerful damage), for utility and useful stats.

I had similar situation as you before after I finish warrior and thinking where to go next. The question that I ask myself is do I like Puppetry or Dual Gun ? If I like Dual gun more, than I will be doing magic for my next telnet. But I choose archery since I wanna be a puppeteer. If you still can't decide, you might can try fighter, since it will give you will, meaning higher critical stats.
