  Basically, most public Minecraft servers exist by selling in game perks for real money to pay for all the server costs. These perks might be a stack of diamonds, or a pickaxe with enchants you can't get in game or something to that effect. Mojang is now saying "No, you can't do that. You are no longer allowed to give ANY reward for donating, so come up with the money yourself or shut down."

  Mojang isnt trying to be greedy, they're trying to protect their company from those abusing it and they've already stated that they're trying to figure out a way to give approval to server owners to sell donation packages

  Really though, that happens to every game where you can pay for things. Parents need to keep a tighter watch on their credit cards or kids need to learn to not be little stealing shits. If every game that got calls from parents whose kids stole their card shut down all sales, there wouldn't be any left.
  
  As for them trying to figure out ways of approving servers, they have said in their latest Q&A that they have no intention of allowing any servers to exempt from the rules and that any servers caught selling perks after August 1st would face consequences.
  
  Also, it seems like an odd coincidence that Mojang is deciding to do this now, right after revealing that later this year they will be releasing a subscription based server system( https://mojang.com/2013/03/what-is-minecraft-realms-anyway/ ). Basically, it looks like they are trying to get rid of the competition to force everyone to pay them to use their servers instead.

  Well, not TOO suprised, since there are the odd Team Fortress 2 servers that give hacking-level benefits to donators who spend more than 50$ on "premium" status.

  like for instance...garry's mod...tf2...counter strike source...stuff like that...
  they allow users to have their own servers...in the case of CSS and GMOD there aren't any extras you can buy if you pay money
  hell, tf2 LET'S you craft EVERYTHING that you can buy AND STILL THEY LET SERVERS HAVE THEIR OWN DONATIONS
  donations keep servers alive...IF YOU TAKE THAT AWAY, WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
  mojang needs to calm their tits and LOOK at what they're trying to do. they need to look at other companies that are like them.
  look at other games that are like them. they need to see and study what they do and try not to be so fucking money hungry.
  or in the end, they will fail and nobody will buy their shitty servers.
