Playing Mabinogi without Windows?

I'm looking for a way to play the game that does not involve having to connect a Windows installation to the internet. Running Windows within a virtual machine is also not acceptable as long as the guest OS has to be connected to the internet, which it will have to be in order to run the game.

In order words, something like WINE (winehq.org) or even ReactOS would be good. Or whatever else you guys can think of.

The only problem is, there just isn't enough information on how to do this. WINE's appdb site only has old reports for Mabinogi and with mixed results.

Also, WINE actually is very well made at this point, most of its compatibility issues with programs nowadays is because people cripple their software intentionally, with things like Hackshield, etc. I'm under the impression that this is the problem with running Mabi in it too.

I am aware that I shouldn't get my hopes up. But with this update, I wanted to see if there was any possibility. There are reports of being able to get Mabi to run, they're just old and I was hoping for some more recent information.

From what I'm reading your best bet is using PlayOnLinux with a prefix that uses Wine 1.01.

But yes, hackshield is going to be the bitch here. And Wine 1.01 seems to be the one that has the least problems with it.

Just to confirm some of what you've read and though... a traditional limitation with MMOs is that WINE is a usermode API translator. MMOs tend to need higher permissions, either themselves on launch, or they install virtual device drivers that run in the background that they communicate with (which is a concept and tech WINE doesn't handle). Crackshield might be of some help here.
