Are pets permanent? I am thinking of getting one. Probably the wolf because SP and Crit seems most useful.

Pets are permanent. They need to be fed though. You can either make the Pet food through Salmon Eggs or purchase the pet food.

pets can be used by all characters and I think shining wolf is pretty good
I also like junior Gnoll chieftain pets for their mining skill, so I don't have to bring mine bombs.

What about bears? I tend to agree with you, wolves seem amazing, given I need SP all the time. I don't find chieftains that useful but they look so cute, plus I always felt guilty killing gnoll chieftain in act I because my superiors don't know the meaning of peace and mercy. They guy didn't even attack us after we raided his place and hurt him... I felt like I killed gandhi or something after finishing that questline...

I use Gnoll Chieftain personally. They are my personal fav.
Also, a warning with the Shining wolf. If you happen to bring it in a raid (in case you might of forgot to desummon it or something), you will cause lag to some individuals due to some weird particle effect it emits from its paws. Some people will actually kick you from the party because of it.
I usually never brings pets into raids because their death usually happens pretty fast. ;_;

What happens if you neglect feeding it?

It can't use its skills once its hunger hits 0.
Although this takes awhile. I can't recall how many runs it would take offhand.

If you enjoy farming ores or need money, I prefer in getting the Gnoll Chieftain pet. If you need more damage done to a certain boss or sp, a wolf pet would be perfect for you! Otherwise there's a gremlin which increases your DEF in battle.
