browsers don't support it, not websites. Websites need only use it instead of a .gif.
I played around with it a bit and it kicks ass., much smaller file sizes than png for same quality. Didn't play with animated ones though.

At the time I played with it firefox and IE didn't support it at all, as of today I don't know.
Actually I confused webm and webp. Webp is the one I played with for images, but that's also done by google and probably in a similar state as webm in terms of acceptance.

Here's a test of webp image format, if your browser supports it natively you'll see the same image twice, the second one being .webp.
It's also a lot smaller in file size (3.1 MB original, 1.2 MB webp) and no real quality loss. It did lose a bit of the "grain" effect from the original but that can be fixed by increasing the quality when saving, still giving a smaller file size than the jpg.
