CNN) -- A Malaysia Airlines passenger jet crashed in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, prompting a Ukrainian official to say that the flight carrying 295 people had been shot down.
The Boeing 777 was "shot down" by "terrorists" operating a Buk surface-to-air missile system, according to a Facebook post from Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.
The plane went down near the town of Torez in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, according to the post, as it flew at about 10,000 meters (nearly 33,000 feet).
"We do not exclude that the plane was shot down and confirm that the Ukraine Armed Forces did not fire at any targets in the sky," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, according to his website.
He also said he has expressed condolences to Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte about Flight 17, which was headed from Amsterdam to Malaysia. He said he invites Dutch experts to participate in the investigation of the crash, emphasizing that he does not call it an "incident" or a "catastrophe," but a "terrorist action."

It isn't 100% confirmed yet but most news sources are saying it was shot down either by Ukraine, or Ukraine rebels.

It's kinda scary to consider that my grandma just came from Malaysia through a Malaysia Airlines plane. Thank God she left when she did, and no later. Still, Malaysia Airlines... it's like someone's got a vendetta with the company.

A senior pro-Russian rebel commander in eastern Ukraine has suggested that many of the victims of the MH17 plane crash may have died days before the plane took off.
Igor Girkin said, on the pro-rebel website Russkaya Vesna, that he was told by people at the crash site that a "significant number" of the bodies were not fresh.
The alleged former Russian military intelligence agent added that he was told the bodies of the victims were drained of blood and reeked of decomposition.
He also said that a large amount of blood serum and medications were found at the site of the wreckage.

There's so many crazy stories going around, as is the norm.
One that's really bad if true though is that apparently there was about 100 HIV/AIDS researchers on board the plane, on their way to a HIV convention. Even if there's any truth to that I doubt the number was anywhere near 100 though.

Didn't hear about there being 100, but there was supposedly one well known researcher.

Two German news outlets report something between 100 and 108 visitors to the convention in Melbourne, where the plane was headed.
