Quote from Lunamaniac;1233065:
Descartes' cogito makes more sense than this. Please forgive me, but you'll have to word that in a way that other people can understand.
I will attempt to clarify by rewording and explaining the statement. I understand that I am clarifying this statement for you. To that end, I also understand that I am rationalizing the fact that I am choosing to understand that I am clarifying this statement for you.
Should the imposed psychological and rational limitations obtained from what we perceive of humanity hinder our creativity, our ability to feel and rationalize those feelings? To understand that we feel a certain way and analyze something from a broader perspective than our own psyche allows us to more strongly define and then justify our emotions. It's no more mechanical a process than the gears of flesh and bone.
If you are raised a certain way you will likely believe certain things. Rape is good. Does this statement offend you? It should probably offend you because you were likely taught to be offended by this statement. Instead of being offended you should instead first be excited about having been granted the opportunity to learn more about yourself and humanity entire. After taking a step back and viewing the subject matter from multiple difference perspectives, you are then (in my opinion) able to justify your emotional reaction.
Perhaps something terrible has happened to you in the past and as a result your ability to comprehend such matters is beyond you. I would not blame you for such incidents but in my opinion you have been broken. There may exist no cures for your injuries but seeking mental or perhaps spiritual help may help you. I have been led to believe that they have helped many others.
Imagine a world were rape was seen as good. Where it was required as a means of survival, as it is for many species. Instead imagine a world where everyone was a pirate—by no means illogical concerning our newborn digital age. Is stealing still wrong? Can you then justify it? Does it even matter? Perhaps not but the fact that you asked these questions instead of lamely believing authority figures (be they media or parental figures) insinuates a creative mind that's able to tackle real world issues and possibly get us off this rock before the sun devours us.
Emotions are not bad. Bad, a relative term and a lazy way of describing things of which understanding them might hurt you. Raw, illogical emotions, might be harmful. It's good to express things like joy and sorrow but you should understand why you feel a certain way; understand that you are Human and to not use your emotions as an excuse for you to abandon your ability to reason.
