Programmer girl should do better than 8/hr. That's what burger flippers make. :(
Burger flippers make minimum wage, not 8. I do factory work because I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. That's why I can handle being within your general vicinity.

8/hr is way below minimum wage here. :( What's min wage in your state? Can't be much lower than 8. o_o

To be fair, most states (and in some cases, cities) have their own minimum wage laws, which are higher and override the minimum national rate.

The federal minimum is 7.25 an hour, and it is the case for most states and cities. It is incredibly difficult to go above this pay even for more difficult or skill oriented jobs, and you won't see employees breaking 10/hr until they're holding certifications or some sort of tangible education/training in their background.
America is really tough to live lately for lower-middle class, compared to most other first world countries.

I have a friend who works nightshift at USPS for 9.50 an hour.
Probably because you're in a city that typically pays more.
