  You don't need the 3D to be on. You can even totally turn it off in the system settings, ignoring what the slider switch says.

  If I recall correctly, the 2DS already had an upper screen similar to the size of the 3DS XL, but had the touch screen of a regular 3DS. In the short time I owned one before getting a 3DS XL(It was offered elsewhere with a better deal), I certainly liked the feel of it better than the 3DS. Could just be my personal experience with the two consoles, but the 2DS felt much easier on the hands and didn't jut into your lower thumb region when you were using the L and R buttons for a prolonged use of time. Maybe I'm just holding it too much like the regular DS.

  I'm not much of a 3D effect person, though I do occasionally turn it on for certain games. The Mario/Kirby games all have pretty neat 3D that's nice to my eyes.
  
  But even without the 3D thing I'm very interested and plan on getting the XL one. I'll just draw my own decals and get them printed when decal websites have the option available. 8)...
