You couldn't evne lauch a simple bolt that far with that little energy being released. His position is also really awkward and doesn't lend itself well for being catapulted forward, instead the force of the makeshift rope being concentrated on just the lower half would simply have made the whole thing tumble - it's like kicking someone's feet away, except mid-air. See how much force they need to launch a little stone as far as they launched the man, and they still need so much power to tension the thing enough despite being mechanically aided.
