*Looks at Banjo and Kazooie Nuts and Bolts*
..Yeah, I don't like where this is going.

Saw this yesterday as "only a rumor".
If it's actually true then fuck no. Microsoft can go suck a dick and leave my minecraft alone.
If this does happen then the last update I'll play up to is before the acquisition.

Minecraft is not worth $2 billion.

Seems like Microsoft is getting a little desperate. Microsoft would ruin the free spirit of Minecraft modding which is what is an important factor for minecraft. Vanilla Minecraft will only go so far.

Over 16 million people have bought Minecraft on PC version alone. At 27$ each, that's nearly half a billion.

There's A WHOLE LOT of numbers between half a billon to 2 billon.

I don't know that any intelligent business person would sell something for exactly as much as they made off it already.

Microsoft would disable modding. Then release mods themselves as DLC.
$$$

The developer actually came out and said they did this because they thought that no one was into platformers from Rare anymore. And that they should have listened to the fanbase more.

She also said that was from PC alone and doesn't take into account mobile sales from their pocket edition or their sales from xbox which would also factor in.
Also apparently they have minecraft out on PS3 which would also bring in more sales.
Seems that there are plans to bring minecraft to the PlayStation Vita as well.
Further reading shows that they also make money from the merchandise.

So yes, taking all of that into consideration, it could very well be worth 2.5 billion.

Damn, I really wasn't aware they had mobile versions and forgot about the console versions >.> It has been a long time since I looked at Minecraft.
It's pretty darn amazing how much it grew, I remember playing the alpha a shit ton of time ago when barely ANYONE knew about the game.

Mojang's not going to be sold.
There's been offers around $2 billion before.
-
Yoorah wrote on 2014-09-11 21:23
The question isn't so much how much they've sold, but what the remaining sales will look like. I doubt Minecraft will grow in popularity, and most people who care for it have probably already bought it by now. Mobile and consoles offer some potential, but how much?
Minecraft was lucky in that it discovered a new recipe for success. Its developer is not particularly talented, AFAIK... can he make Minecraft 2 and sell a ton of copies again? Maybe, I dunno.
To Microsoft, it's not about the business case for the game. As the article mentions, it's about promotion of Windows Phone and the Windows 8 app store. It just makes me wonder if they can find a better ways to spend $2 bn on advertising/marketing.

If it's all a marketing thing such as getting mojang's games (they don't only have minecraft) on new windows devices they could probably just work out a deal with mojang to develop on that platform (if they didn't already plan to anyways).
