Do not say "don't train it, it's worthless".
Any advice/tips/locations on training this skill, other than being persistent? Do I actually need to have a better taming cane/bait or can I do just fine with courcle?

[S]don't train it, it's worthless[/S]
You don't NEED better cane/bait... but why not get one?
They don't lose dura through taming, just time/smacking things with it so the irrepairability won't matter much.
Tikka Wood Taming Cane is the best (tied with the Life Exploration Taming Cane, but that one acts weird when it comes to equipping bait) and you can get that from Rafting Shop for 48 stars
As for bait... well, you do get a better chance to tame with better bait.
I usually stock up on Shrimp Taming Bait (Kneading recipe) which makes x10 bait per craft.
But hey, if you don't wanna bother, persistence is useful.
And, I know this was a kind of hard to get reward from the SAO event that is now over, but... ALO Asuna 2nd title boosts the success rate of Taming Wild Animals.
Since the training is CP based, outside of the "tame this specific type of mob" training reqs, can just say to go tame whatever is easiest for you to spam, while still falling within that CP bracket.

taming cane barely gives any bonus, it's the shrimp bait that gives the bonus you need.
the taming cane you will be using is the npc taming cane reforged with lv2 taming exp.
Anything else and you might encounter trouble with CP requirements.
As for taming success rate, as of now taming success rate does not relate to monster's current HP at all.
success rate is capped at a fixed value so be ready to fail a lot.
this is what i can remember from the top of my head, but i'll add more information as i look back at the korean guide that helped me master this skill.
gratz for deciding to explore contents that no one else bothers with.

I thought they made it not require CP anymore? I have +3k CP and there's nothing I have that can drop it down.

Oh, if you use a level 2 Exp reforged taming cane, like abc mentioned, you should be able to bypass any CP-based requirements completely.
I was mentioning that just 'cause it's still there, as an option (albeit a hard to take option with high CP).
