The HK protesters are actually pretty awesome: Things that could only happen in a Hong Kong protest
- Doing your homework
- Apologising for the barricade you put up
- Deploying ancient arts of self defence with an umbrella
- Concern for how fragrant fellow protesters are
- Keeping off the well cut grass lawn when asked by a cardboard sign
- Being the tidiest protesters on the block
For those who don't know what it's about--the protests are basically happening because China won't let Hong Kong choose election candidates for the coming election. Instead, HK voters will choose from a list of candidates pre-approved by China's communist party. Naturally, people are against this as it doesn't feel meaningful.

When the UK returned HK to China, the Chinese promised that HK would retain its human rights and that the Chinese government will not meddle in its internal affairs for 50 years--it'll only be in charge of international affairs and defence.

I hope China does the rational thing and lets them choose their candidates.

Yeah I don't see why Chinese government is so against this. Honestly I really don't like the current chairman of the communist party. He means well, but he is also rash and inelegant. Basically he is running Chinese economy into the ground by limiting state run companies' personnel income and funnel those money to government employees. Also there are now strict no gift and no usage of public fund. Management and above level personnels are forced into retirements... etc. Yes corruption was bad in China but those spending was also a big part of what drives Chinese economy. People want to spend and they have the means to spend. That was the dream, US and Canadian government dreamed of that kind of market where people are actually spending. Now people are afraid to spend and they also don't have the money TO spend. Yes corruption is bad, but another way to look at it is government spending. government is essentially stimulating the economy by giving money to people in state run businesses and allow them to spend it. Chinese have fixed exchange rate so the only mean to manipulate GNP is government policies. decrease tax, increase government spending etc. And this fucking moron is actually chocking the spending and try to "fix" corruption. China still had so much potential, but I guess when it's time, it is time. Chinese economic growth will be over soon if he keeps this up and there is no way of building consumer confidence back up. West has been trying for years. This is face palm worthy but what can I do? except watching a middle school graduate flushing the economy down to drain.

On the plus side, devaluation means currency value increase. Of course exchange rate is fixed but domestic purchasing power of Yuan will surely go up as result of this ridiculous chairman. So things will be cheaper in China, yay.
