These maid cafes typically cater to what the Japanese call otaku (read: nerds), who pride themselves on an encyclopedic knowledge of anime and crippling agoraphobia—exempting, of course, the occasional outing to voyeuristically gaze at some young, submissive, costumed women.

I remember reading about something like a few years ago.
Except the one they were showcasing had a lot of landwhales.
I passed by one in Chinatown at one point but never went in, which might be this one.

This is no cute maid. :( wtf
I'd still go there for the hell of it. I wonder if we have something like this in Toronto.

You mean because of the collar?
I have mixed feelings about this sort of thing. I think it'd be less weird if there was butlers too. I'd love to be served by a butler, doesn't matter if it's a guy or not.

It's big in Japan though.

There's one in Culver City too. Passed by it on my way to a party once.

I heard they closed down a few years ago. They started catering to the Chinese community.
There's almost no Japanese people in eastern Canada. Is it the same in NY?

I almost never see Japanese people in NY. Same goes for most of my friends.

In NY its all about where they congregate, although from my knowledge most work all over and not-so-ironically in JP restaurants, bars, etc. St. Marks is one prime example, where you'll see and hear plenty in the evenings.
As far as maid cafes in the states.... not a good niche since majority of the population has no idea what they really are and what the real appeal is. In Tokyo, those girls literally work to the bone for those paychecks, but biz is always booming.

I don't know if anyone already mentioned this but that is a sad maid cafe.
Not recommended.
The "maids" in that picture are not the ones working there anymore. Last few times I went they were Hispanic and Mexican...which is fine, it's just not what I was expecting...
Rarely anyone shows up. It's located at the edge of China Town and Canal Street (English shopping area and knockoff Asian area).
I'd recommend the Japanese place right above it. It's a lot prettier~

During my senior year in HS (last year) I tried applying to that cafe, and before I can fill out the necessary paper work, they told me that they don't hire part timers.
I'm not sure how it's like now since I've moved to San Francisco just for college...I should re-visit them soon before I fly off to the west coast again.
They're all chinese girls too with majority of them just smiling barely speaking or has a heavy accent.
And I was surprised how that cafe isn't as populated as the Bubble milk tea cafes around Brooklyn

I've been to one in NY, just not this one.
