They already have.

Not all parts of the United States celebrate Columbus Day. It is not a public holiday in some states such as California, Oregon, Nevada and Hawaii.

By government, i meant federal, not state. which still technically means no.

Would be nice if they changed columbus day to something else. federal holidays start to get dry after february. Cesar Chavez day seems to get some momentum but that wont happen in the midwest easily.

The midwest is too hard headed to change anything.
