Yeah, no kidding. A tech firm was offering me a job in SF, but then I looked at rent prices... A 1 bedroom apartment in decent neighbourhoods goes for over $3,000/mo. I decided it's not worth the risk, even though they were giving me a substantial raise. :< Sometimes I wonder if I should have gone anyway.
Some of the cities where Google Fiber is being rolled out are fairly affordable, I believe. Maybe you should consider one of those. :P
Honestly, that was probably a smart move. The housing market is a total disaster out here, too. Unless you have a lump sum of $500k+ lying around, you will be outbid by someone with a lump sum of $500k+ lying around, so buying a place to avoid the horrific rent situation is pretty out of the question. :c Although, if you don't mind living with a ton of roommates for the rest of your life, it's a great place to live! My boss is in his 50s, has 3 of them, & is totally happy.
Personally, I can't get over the fact that I paid less for rent in NYC. >w< It was fun for a bit, but I'm definitely heading for more affordable climes as soon as I work out a master plan. I would like to own a tiny house & not have to live with people I'm not sleeping with. XD
