It depends, you could either believe squall died, and everything is an illusion from the get-go, or Riona being on a crusade to keep her husbando squall for all eternity by compressing time.

i don't get into those fan theories
i'm saying it's fucked up cuz ultimecia only goes through time because of squall and his party
therefore, they doomed themselves from the beginning
everything that happened in the ff8 universe is their fault
i just wish squall told everyone and had them realize that
