(Probably lots of typos my iPad tends to guess words for me)
My mom has never been a big believer in my preaching of "the outdoors is a dangerous place for cats"
So obviously she keeps her cat Lily outside and lets her come in whenever she wants. Lily is going to turn nine soon and as an elderly cat she spends most of her time sleeping indoors. She goes outside to go to the bathroom and then usually comes inside to eat and then go to sleep.
Last Thursday she had been gone all day which is very unusual for her and as the sun began to set I went out to find her. After a few minutes she came out very slowly and let out the weakest meow I've ever heard from her. She has a huge appetite and hadn't eaten at all that day but refused food so I knew she was sick but the vet's office had already closed so I planned on bringing her in in the morning.
My sister hadnt come home yet so she had no idea that she was supposed to stay indoors at least until the next day and let her out when she came home which was after dark. She disappeared which is worse than her just being found dead normally because there is no closure.
My mom is the type who has to have closure otherwise she never gets over it. A few years ago I had a neighbor who hated my mom's dog because his dog and her dog would bark at each other during the day when they were out and he slept during the day. One day the dog disappeared and the son bragged to another kid how his dad dumped him in the woods. This is hearsay so nothing could be done about it but she didn't know if he was alive or dead and to this day she's not over it.
Last night we still had no luck in finding her dead or alive, the wind was blowing really hard and at around midnight last night I stepped out to see if I could smell the scent of death. I knew she was dead, a cat comes in really sick goes back out and doesn't come back for over six days the only conclusion I could come to is that she had died somewhere. I couldn't small anything but in the darkness I hatched an idea to give give her the closure she needed. I grabbed a shovel and dug a very wide and very deep hole and then filled it in and put concrete blocks over it which is what we do to keep other animals from digging up the graves. I left a note tell her to wake me when she woke up because I needed to tell her something important. Instead I woke up to "LILY!!!"
The cat had returned still slightly sick and she had lost a lot of weight over the week she was missing. I was thrilled, of course but then came the question of. "What's with the huge patch of loose dirt" and I had no excuse.
"I was gone no to lie to you, tell you I had found her and buried her for you so you could have the closure you needed"
"That plan seemed to have backfired"
"Yeah, but it's okay because she's home now I just hope you're not mad"
"I'm not mad I understand why you were going to lie"
