Mabination web hosting

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. You can not register, post or otherwise interact with the site other than browsing the content for historical purposes. The content is provided as-is, from the moment of the last backup taken of the database in 2019. Image and video embeds are disabled on purpose and represented textually since most of those links are dead.

I'll soon be changing mabination's web hosting, to go from paying about 100$ per month to 30$, by moving the web servers into my home infrastructure.

You guys will still be requesting the website from public facing servers, but they will be cheap-ass 10$ VPSs in 3 different geographic areas set up with round-robin DNS.

When you request mabination.com in your browser, one of 3 servers in either the US, UK or Netherlands will respond, and act as a proxy between you and my house.

It's already in place for my personal website https://osayidan.net
If you spam nslookup requests on "osayidan.net" you'll see 3 IPs that keep changing their order.

The tentative date for the switch for mabination will be this coming weekend. The forums will be down for an unknown period of time so I can do a database backup and import into the new server, and transfer any files that aren't already synced (mainly avatars that people might have changed).

You will see a "forum is offline" message when it is happening, and if you happen to see a message like "Forum has moved, you're now seeing the old version" it means your DNS has not yet updated to the new one, though this shouldn't happen to 99% of you since I've already set the TTL on the DNS records to be very low.

For those who have no idea what I just said: possibly a big maintenance this weekend.

Cheaper, since nation hasn't paid for itself since around the end of 2013. Ad block became too popular or something.

Also plan to remove all ads for logged in users since I won't need nation to earn money anymore, but will add even more ads for guests as a sort of tax for sucking up my internet connection without contributing anything to the community.

Interesting, do you believe performance will improve? Is your in-house server better than the current one? I'm sure the computer can handle it, since you have a beast, but what about your ISP? Speed, uptime, those moments when you download porn (unless you have a separate service dedicated to the hosting), etc.

The average bandwidth use for nation's server has been about 150 - 200 KB/s, and a lot of that average is increased because of my frequent file transfers for backups. Will have a lot less transferring over internet to do now that everything is local.
I have about 1 MB/s upload and 1.5 MB/s download. I also set up QoS on the hosting traffic, so that should be good.

The uptime for my servers on electricity has been pretty good as well, only 1 power failure in the past year. Internet uptime from ISP hasn't been down at all since I got it. Overall the uptime should be very similar to what it is now considering all the network issues this host has had.

Let me know if you notice anything weird, or if anything is broken.
First time I do a configuration like this for a website as dynamic as a forum so there might be some weird stuff going on that I didn't see in my tests.

Also DNS records are currently set to 1 second TTL so you might often see "resolving host" in the corner of your browsers when you load a page, going to set it higher later today.
