Pox Parties

  A pox party (also measles party, flu party etc.) is a social activity where children are deliberately exposed to an infectious disease, supposedly to promote immunity. Such parties are typically organized by anti-vaccinationists on the premise of building the immune systems of their children against diseases such as chickenpox and measles (which can be more dangerous to adults than to children) or flu. Such practices are highly controversial and are discouraged by public health officials.[1] In the USA, if the exposure involves the United States Postal Service to swap contaminated items, the practice is illegal.[2]

  The practice has become antiquated due to advances in medicine. It may have been feasible in the early 2000's.

  The chickenpox vaccine was first introduced to the United States in 1995, with a combination shot issued in 2005. Varicella is often devastating to adolescents and adults as opposed to the mild form than children encounter. The "gambling with the life of others" statement is just utter rubbish. Parents have to "gamble with the lives" of their children all the time. If you chose to give your child a vaccine and they had an allergic reaction, is that not "gambling with their life?"
  
  It's a matter of probability now as it was back then.
  
  That being said, as stated earlier, it's typically a really bad idea to refuse vaccinations. In my opinion, the "anti-vaccine" crowd should be slapped like a line of dominoes.

  The statement is not "just rubbish" because you shouldn't forget children that are infected are children who are contageous, even if they themselves don't suffer. If it doesn't happen in a very well-controlled environment, the possible repercussions easily outweigh the benefits, because then by saving one person you endanger several others.

  seriously, where were you 15 years ago, when this was practice was shown and practically encouraged in television/media and this would have actually been a relevant conversaton

  How is it not relevant? It's still done, so it's a contemporary issue. It doesn't matter if it's a freaky fringe group. IN a country of 300 million people, even several hundreds of thousands or millions are fringe groups, and that's not including the whole anglosphere or nations outside of it.
  Pretty much all murder stories are a smaller issue than parents sending their kids to various "disease" parties, not jsut chicken pox, but they're still talked about, some at length. And it's only part of a wide culture of paranoid shit-for-brains anti-science parents who expose their kids and other people to deadly diseases because they think vaccinations are part of a government conspiracy and freaky shit like that. Like a mom refusing to treat her toddler's pneumonia with antibiotics?
  The phenomenon is definitely relevant.

  you're completely outraged with something nearly the entire west knows is wrong, and stopped practicing a while ago.
  when a person practically kills their child because they don't trust medicine, a normal reaction is "oh no, that's terrible!" and said person goes to jail. i would never compare neglecting a sick child to a pox party.
  no one takes it as a "social phenomenon", because no matter how much the government/media embeds the right thing into your brain, and no matter how taboo something is, there will always be someone who does it anyway, despite warnings and knowing the consequences. happens with practically everything you could think of.
  maybe my lack of caring has to do with being a child, having many friends attend pox parties and watching them decrease, to the point that my littlest sister has never even heard of the term, but it just seems like your complaint is...late. by a lot.
  
  that said, the post is just kinda strange. you could have posted a specific article about a pox party that was going on somewhere and it would be cool, but the topic is just a general thread about the existence of pox parties. could have posted a thread saying "WOW people kill other people" "WOW people abuse drugs "WOW people rape women" and it's like UHH ok where u been lol
  guessing you never heard they existed before which is ok i dunno how popular they were in germany, but yeah. just letting you know. reaaaaaaaally late.
