My step dad is trying to replace the wick in the kerosene heater. He has a bunch of parts laying on the counter that he can't figure out how to put back on yet he claims he doesn't need any help, knows what he is doing, and the parts are just extra and not really needed.
So, am I going to die? Like, I know it's not going to work because he's an idiot and leaving half the parts out, but in what way will it not work? Will it just not light at all or should I be expecting an explosion?

No, it's simple. Get out of the house before he tries to turn it on.
But seriously, if he doesn't know what he's doing, how can he tell those parts aren't needed? I have seen things with extra parts that are not needed, such as extra covers, bases, etc. This sounds like he took out half the heater though. Good luck, mate.

He can't. He just has 0% patience and 100% stubborn ass stupidity.
So when a piece doesn't fit or he can't figure it out instead of thinking "I must have fucked something up. This was in there when I took it out, so it must go back in. Maybe I should stop messing with it until I can figure it out." He thinks "Fucking piece, not doing what I command it. Must be extra shit that isn't needed anyway, I'll just keep ramming shit together without that piece and throw it away later after I prove I'm right that it wasn't needed."

I have no idea. Luckily my mom convinced him to stop fucking with it and take it to someone that knows what they are doing, so I won't be exploding at least. [S]Unfortunately that means he won't be exploding either.[/S]

What are you all worried about? Its only Kerosene. You have to go out of your way to provoke it to do more than make a decent sized poof of fire with it.
Worst case he would try to light it while assembled wrong and it'd simply flare up really bright and smokey or fizzle out rather quickly. Long as you've got a fire extinguisher its no big deal.
On a more serious note, why are you still using a Kerosene heater? These days ceramic-core electric heaters are the way to go for durability and efficiency. Plus they are quite safe- the ceramic core allows a tremendous heat output while maintaining a low surface temperature and not having any exposed glowing hot coils or flames.

We don't own a fire extinguisher.

Because ceramic-core heaters are shit. This heats the entire house. We have probably wasted well over $500 over the years on ceramic-core heaters because everyone claims they're amazing, they never keep shit warm. They're only ever good if you're within a foot of them, any further and you might as well not even have a heater. They can't even heat 1 room, let alone an entire house.

Keep in mind this is the same step-dad that greets me when he comes home with "Are you getting a job and leaving yet? I'm tired of my money supporting someone who isn't even mine. The sooner you leave the sooner we can use your room for something useful."
