Because drinking is more than just social interaction in Korea.
It has a cultural significance.

Name/Nicknames: Zachary Edward Mosher, Zac
Age: 25
Height: 6'
Current Location: Vermont
Sex/Gender: Male
Relationship Status: Single, not currently looking (though if love happens, I'm all for it)
Siblings: Two younger sisters
Pets: One cat, Khitty
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Smoke/Drink/Drugs: I don't smoke, though I have tried it twice in the past. I occasionally drink, a Mike's Hard Lemonade a month or so. If I'm drinking socially, then I can down a fifth of Jack Daniels in under an hour and a half, in which case I become the life of the party by singing and rocking out (figuratively and literally out of my seat). I don't have a problem with minor drugs like marijuana and mushrooms, and occasionally partake, but I don't go out of my way to do it (meaning if I'm at a party and someone passes around a joint, I'll take a hit, but I'm not going to go out and buy myself some).
Religious Beliefs: I'm what I call a "spiritual agnostic". I know that there are greater forces of good and evil, in some shape or form, but I don't know what they are. And I'm not about to find out.
Pet Peeves: Lack of common sense, sound of ripping paper, not doing things at my own pace
Favorite Singers/Bands: Too many to list. I have a very broad spectrum of musical taste, and what I consider "favorite" changes regularly. One day I might sit down and listen to nothing but Johann Sebastian Bach, and the next I'm binging death metal, and then the next just listen to Pink Floyd, just for the next day to listen to New Orleans jazz. Basically, if I'm willing to listen to a song, it's my favorite.
Favorite Book: Not really a book fan, though the books that I've read multiple times and still enjoy are Starship Troopers and The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Favorite Movie: Again, too many too list.
Hobbies: Video games, baseball, ultimate, listening to music
Current/Future Job: I currently work in the deli of a small town general store. I also help cut meat,
run register, lead other employees when the boss/store manager are gone for the day, close out at night, open in the morning (hell, I've even closed and then came in the next morning to open), had one year where I only had maybe 3 days off the entire summer, and had to actually fire someone because the store manager was on vacation, and the boss didn't want to do it himself. All for an amazing $11.50 an hour while working there for nearly five years, [S]while a new cashier that barely does her job only started a month ago, and is already making $10 an hour[/S]. Yeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhh....
As for a future job, because I sure as hell don't want to do this for the rest of my life, I still haven't decided. I want to take some online college courses so I can actually find a real job, but I really don't have a ton of money to spare throughout the year on classes.
Quote You like: "Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!" - Dr. Seuss
Do you eat breakfast in the morning?: Considering that I don't normally get up in the morning, since I primarily close the store at night now? No.
What was your favorite TV show as a child? Power Rangers, DBZ, Pokemon, wrestling
Favorite gift you've received? Can't think of one. I care little about what I got, and more about the fact that someone went out of their way to show that I mean something to them.
Who most positively influenced your life in 2014? Can't really say anyone's positively influenced me this year, since I'm pretty much at the same place as last year. If anything, I've gotten worse over the year. At least last year, I was more social than I am now.
Are you allergic to anything? Maple pollen, which is funny considering I live in the maple capitol of the U.S.
What is your ideal significant other? Someone who is honest, and quiet. I don't mean quiet as in she never talks, but rather she isn't going to be someone who spreads rumors constantly. She can be a little mean spirited in a teasing manner, but knows when to stop.
Trait you admire most in others? As long as they have common sense and aren't an ass, I'm generally cool with them.
Ice cream cake or cake? Cake. For some reason, I can't really eat ice cream. I can eat popsicles and other frozen things just fine, but ice cream I can't. I usually have to have it be mostly melted before I can eat it, at which point you can't really call it ice cream anymore.
What food do you hate? Fish. Can't stand the smell of it, it makes my stomach do like seven ninja back flips. I only eat maybe a tenth of a pound of it a year for Christmas Eve because it's a family tradition, but I pretty much force it down and gag the entire time.
Broken any bones? Broke my left wrist and my right elbow.
Who was your first crush? Can't remember her name, considering this was almost twenty years ago.
What are you wearing? Currently, a large gray fleece hoodie and pajama pants. For regular day attire, pretty much just jeans, a t-shirt and a button down long sleeve shirt that I leave open. It makes it feel like a cape, and capes are cool.
Power to fly or teleport? Despite growing up with an extreme fear of heights, I'd go with flying. Unless by teleporting, you mean like Yukari Yakumo from the Touhou series where you create gaps in reality which you can effectively teleport like Portal, in which case, I'll go with that power.
What's the first thing you do when you get home? Give my cat treats. Why? I don't know, but she's at the door when I pull up in the drive way, and she yells at me before I even get a chance to take my shoes off just so that I give her treats.
Do you have any quirks? People tell me that I'm serious, but awkward. Not sure if that means I'm seriously awkward or awkardly serious. Also, I easily get stressed out, which usually ends up with me shutting down.
If you were a cookie what flavor would you be? Probably the sugar cookie. While it's pretty much the simplest kind of cookie to make, you can do a lot of things with it because of its simplicity. I'm the same way. Once you get to know me, you'd know that I'm not exactly extravagant or complicated, but I can fill what ever need of it.

I suppose it's something hard to understand if you've never really been to Korea, drinking goes beyond mere pleasure and, like ironwoman mentioned, social interaction... the culture is very different from any other country that I've visited. I've found that unless you're holed up somewhere doing nothing, it's fairly hard to avoid having drinks when you're there. To add to that... if you're in Korea and not out and about, you're doing it wrong.

While I can respect that, I don't think someone should be subjected to drinking if they don't want to.

Remember to take everything in moderation!
