UFO sightings date earlier than that though. There was even some reported by ww2 pilots, on both sides. Weird light orbs following their bombers.

Well, they're responsible for UFO sightings when people started to associate them with aliens...
There were "unkown flying objects" earlier, sure, but they weren't part of the alien craze. When I said UFO, I meant "alien aircraft", lol.

The sightings in the 50s 60s and 70s were indeed the product of super-secret aircraft being tested. Craft like the U2 and the SR71 blackbird, whose unusual appearance and test conditions would make people go wait what.

well that's a bummer, I rather like the idea that we have been contacted by aliens and they weren't trying to kill us.
