I have two pets to train (clover pig and black flamemare) and I didn't realize the counter for age starts when you first summon rather than when you create, so the timer actually started today instead of what I assumed was a lost cause of about a year ago, and now I'm going to be spending a fun first few weeks of a school quarter grinding these things up. Due to time constraints Rath Banquet may not be an option (though I will certainly try).
The unfortunate part: the character these two pets are tied to is my elf, who is not my main, and is something around total level 250-something. (There was a very good reason for making her on a different server from the other two back when I made her, but it doesn't apply anymore so I feel a bit sheepish that I didn't stuff her on Mari like the other two.) So I know about black-tailed mongooses and hard mode dungeon runs, but the former I'm not good at gauging the strength of before I get smashed to a pulp and the latter I can't even get into.
Keeping that in mind, where do you suggest I level these up to at least a point they won't be completely useless? Ideally I just want the clover pig to not be completely starved for mana by the time it stops gaining stats on level-up and the flamemare to be useful (since it'll probably be the primary combat pet on that account).

It'd be very difficult to level up your pets if your total level is around 200, but summoning your pet in Shadow Missions (including Tara/Tail daily missions) will help leveling up!
Personally I do not find a need to level up most of pets (ex: flamemare, nimbus) but in case of herb pigs/gnus, level 30-40s would be enough to keep their mana up to 40+. Also keep in mind that herb pigs/gnus lose MANA as they get older :(

Play as your pet. Ask some friends to take you to SMs and dungeons while you're on your pet, that way you get like 100% of the exp rather than like 50% shared (especially if you put it on last hit or 'Anyone on Party)

you can always do conflict HM with a buddy or two
as long as they're understanding and allow you to stick to the pet you want to level, then you'll be fine
you'll get levels and money
and the pet will get levels

You can't get into SMs as a pet.

If you are worried about mana consumption for your gathering pets, I strongly recommend getting Fantastic Chorus and Harvest song. That way you can just keep the mana replenished when ever you need without potions.
As for leveling, at your level the only thing I can think of would be getting a party to dungeon run with you as the pet. You would have to take all the finishes and set the setting to "all to finish". Ciar basic was what I used to run way back when. P:

In the case of herb pets if you only want to level them up for mana for herb gathering don't waste too much time. Level it just enough to get about 30 or so mana and then when you collect from it have it sit in the hot spring that restores mana, it'll never run out unless you use something to increase gathering speed.

you could just log in as your pet and sit in the tara banquet. Pets get 1/2 the exp of what normal characters get.

You can fill you pet with phoenix feathers, log in as the pet and have a high CURRENT level friend die and be revived by the pet. If their current level is 150+ I heard it's roughly 15-20k exp per revive.

Play as your pet, have a friend grab a commerce wagon of expensive goods, get master bandits and set exp to finish, finish rules all. If you have a friend who can take out masters with ease then you'll hit 60 on a pet within an hour or two.
