You can easily make a much better computer now with just $1,000. But it really depends on what you want to use it for. Like you say gaming, but what type of gaming? Are you one who wants every at 60 fps at maximum settings with all the bells and whistles?

Cheapest upgrade you can do in my opinion is to upgrade RAM to 8GB(if you have more RAM slots, you can go for 2 x 2GB ones, which is cheaper than 4GB RAM) and get an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti, which is much better than outdated Radeon HD 5770.
If you have more money, you can invest more for better GPU too since 750 Ti can't really run the latest games(well it could, but at lower resolution), but should be good enough for most of MMOs out there.
