The new design doesn't really bother me... My skype automitically updates, but I always have the emoticons disabled though.

You can block advertisements on skype.

I did this from the start, ages ago. It's still working fine and I've been keeping my Skype up to date.
Running old versions of software is generally not a good idea.
I dislike them for removing the secret "cat on keyboard" indicator, though. :(

I'm using the current version with no problems. The only Issue I did have is when they decided to squeeze everything into one big window with tabs for conversations but you can disable that and use individual windows very easily.
We really need some kind of modern web-based HTML5-only IRC that everyone is able to use on any platform.
I would quit using skype if all my friends knew how to (and did) use IRC. Though even I find IRC annoying as fuck if all I want to do is open an app and chat with people and not have to enter commands to join a room or login to my username and what not.

I've yet to see a very good one, but they also need an actual IRC back-end which just feels pointless. If you're going to have it web based may as well have it be completely web based using modern technologies.
Things like google hangouts chat, facebook chat or the skype integration when you login to hotmail, except instead of broken and ugly, functional and well designed with some basic modern features like permanent chat groups, file sharing and video/audio chat. I'm surprised something like that isn't available, or that if it is available why it's not more popular because everyone I talk to who uses skype hates skype and is waiting for such a thing to exist.

WhatsApp does all that and is p decent. But as we all know, it is mobile only which also sucks all dicks.
But yeah, there seems to be a lack of good, modern instant messaging software.

I actually liked the new chat bubbles.
What I don't like is that obnoxious persistence that is the right side of the screen, even if you remove the ad.

Does anybody even use Split Window View?
I can't stand using Skype with a single window plus it has that giant bubble space for ads :L

Always been on split windows here, which is why I don't see the problem.
I still think skype has a number of other issues but this isn't one.

Split window view is too much trouble when the conversations are sparsely inconsistent.
