I built a new rig
(specs here and here)not long ago and installed Windows 8.1 on it.
With the keyboard I have right now, the music app works like a charm. I can play/pause/skip the music by a simple press of two keys.
The OS in general is fast and pretty easy to use.
There's some stuff that I had to get adjusted, but it's fine.
Just thought I'd share this here c:

I have a laptop with Windows 8.1 and I hate it for Mabinogi. constants hangs AND freezes and crashes the game quite often. Goods luck, I am going to roll back to Windows 7 as soon as I can

I think Windows 8.1 is a great OS. It's simple and fast. What more can you ask for?
I didn't really have any problems with Mabi on 8.1 either, of course, it has been a while since I last played Mabi anyways.
Overall I like it a lot better than Windows 7.
Sure the Metro start screen is kind of weird at first, but I don't think its bad at all.
I know lots of people complain about the lack of a start menu, but how hard is it to adapt? Besides the OS as a whole is a lot cleaner without the Aero effect and the round glossy finish Windows 7 had.

I like 8.1 more than 7. Have had zero issues with any apps. It's more resource efficient as well. I'm hoping 10 will be even better.

I've been on windows 8.1 for ages now and i can proudly say I've only ever used the metro start menu 5 times (which 5 of them were accidental windows key presses). The shortcuts are kind of handy and the OS is fast, The only thing i don't like is that some options are really hidden (Win+S search only shows the "metro" settings for mouse when i type mouse for example)

I've been running Windows 8/8.1 with Classic Shell for the last couple of years. I don't have any major complaints aside from the bios being hell.

I remember trying the Windows 8 technical preview and liking it. Hated the start screen at first but then realized it was OK after I removed all the useless apps from it and customized it to suit my needs. One thing I disliked was that search for the purposes of launching apps didn't seem to work as well as on Windows 7.
Unfortunately, a friend dragged me back into Mabi at the time and Mabi didn't run reliably on Windows 8 tech preview. NX released a compatibility patch for the game later which probably fixed some of the issues, but by then I was already on Win 7.
Been meaning to upgrade back to Windows 8/8.1 but at the same time, I didn't really care enough to do it. I'll just upgrade to Windows 10 when that's finally released.

I wonder if people realize right clicking the start button is pretty close to having a start menu.

I guess it depends on how you used to use the start menu in the past (win7) but the way windows 8 does their start menu just made it easier for me to use it the way I did on 7... so I really like it.
I used to "pin to start" all the stuff I used frequently, which would get a bit annoying and cluttered in such a small space. For everything else I would do a search instead of browsing around the start menu.
That's pretty much the 2 main things the windows 8+ start menu is designed around doing. So for those people who like to browse around inside their start menu to find what they want it'll definitely be hard to get used to.
