Oh and ill be special upgrading it with red stones.

That doesn't matter.

You only want the highest damage possible you crit is negligible, as even without gears, it's easy to get 100+ crit.

I personally used the 285 path because I can't stand relying on a gamble when it comes to artisans. It's a healthy balance of crit and max. While it's possible to have all the crit you need through stats alone, that's assuming you're really stacking that luck and will because you're so leveled. Not everyone does that. I've got a buddy of 3k total who runs with a BDK sword and nothing else (bless his heart) and still can't break 110% crit. That said, it's understandable to want to worry about crit.

Now, I would still talk against the artisan upgrade. Before that, I would recommend the 295 path. 3 less max than a perfect artisan roll, which realistically, you won't get. It has slightly lower crit than a artisan perfect roll, but it's most likely going to have more crit than your average artisan roll anyways. If you're fine with paying for mulitple artisan removal kits in order to obtain something that would ultimately be slightly better than your 295, by all means go for it.

You don't need to be leveled a lot to have that much crit. Even at level 2k, you can surpass that threshold easily without major crit enchants. Using your friend as an example isn't really a good idea, as we can assume that an average Mabinogi player will probably have some sort of gear to their character besides their weapons.

With all that being said, because crit is so much easier to get than damage, because of easily accessed will (critical hit, windmill, and moderately ranked ninja will give you enough crit), the only choices that a player should do is 315 if they want to artisan upgrade, 295 if they don't.

I think you put a little too much faith in your average mabinogi player. That's not to say I'm the cynical type, but I just see far too many people who go like "uh, enchants? I don't swing that way." Maybe Ive got rotten luck, but that's just the majority of people I see, aka, your average player.

I don't feel like my personal experience example was a bad one either, since it shows what can be, and be quite often at that, despite using a fairly developed character using a weapon with high crit. OP would still need some type of crit enchants for his crit to match what would be if used with a BDK sword instead.

But hey, my own 285 was made years ago when I wasn't as developed and I didn't have as much crit, before lances were the meta and talents existed, and I really wanted to have a comfortable amount of crit without enchants. You could argue he doesn't need that much crit, because by the time OP does, he'll most likely use a lance instead, or whatever.

I mean, OP is still fairly new judging from his introduction post in january, and mentioned himself as a weekend player. I don't think it would be reasonable to expect for him to have all the crit he needs from stats under his belt. More importantly, that's why the 285 would suit his needs.

There's a thing called talent, and if you're not gonna go for enchants, which shouldn't give too much crit to begin with, you might as well say those people really don't care much about combat, and hence can be negligible when it comes to debates about item upgrades since it's obviously not their main interest. Like I said before, you don't need a lot of stats to have enough crit. And I'm not even talking by my medium standards, I'm talking standards far lower than mine. Windmill, critical hit, and maybe 2-4 Ninja skills somewhat ranked is literally all you need for some crit.

That being said, there is absolutely no reason to get crit upgrades on weapons meant to do higher amount of max damage. The only upgrade you go besides max damage on weapons are either bullet chamber increase or balance upgrades for guns, and most will still prefer max damage.
