  Game modding is supposed to be as fun as the games themselves. People for years have been making game mods because they want to and sharing them free of charge so that other people can have fun with them too.
  
  There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for that to be changed. The entire community spirit that has driven modding to be as big as it is would be shattered, as it is this incident with Steam will have permanent scars and lasting impacts.
  
  If you really want to make money off of your programming or modelling skills, get a job at a studio that makes use of such talents. Or start such a studio yourself, that way you are beyond the level of a hobbyist modder and on the level of a professional content creator.

  What's wrong with developers choosing their model of monetization? You could always show your protest or lack of interest via abstention. Developers could always choose to release their mods for free as well.

  Step 3: Pay dividends to everyone involved
  Step 4: Today's profits: $0.50
  
  A good concept with poor execution is a bad concept in practice (see: communism).

  Except they don't. You don't ever get any money for your music or artwork unless you manage to make it popular enough that people are willing to pay you for it, usually at first in the form of a donation box but later as commissioned works.
  
  Eventually you get to a point where you are getting enough donations and commisions to transform your hobby into a small business, creating its own website and store or partnering with a larger studio to make and distribute your work.
  
  Game mods typically don't last long enough to get that far along, the few that do usually partner up with an existing studio in order to make a game of their own out of the mod's concepts and the results of that are then sold as its own game.
  
  You might ask why I would almost overreact to the idea of someone wanting to sell game mods. The reason for that is simple. Because of what has happened, a disturbing number of people are going to get into game modding in the hopes of making some quick cash off of a cheap hack they came up with only for them to not bother maintaining it and leave it broken and abandoned. Its going to drastically hurt the overall quality of game mods- a mod made with the intent to sell it will not have the same attention to detail and continued development as a mod made by someone passionate about what they do. And its too late to stop this, even though Steam decided not to continue their program the idea is still in people's minds. The well has been poisoned, things cannot go back to how it was.

  Mods are modifications of existing work.
  Musicians and artists create new work.
  
  While both put in much effort, one is technically infringing copyrights (with or without the authorization of the original content creator). If I were to spend 40 hours making an awesome skyrim mod (and I have in the past made really nice map add-ons) it's because I like the game and want to do something cool with it.
  
  If your friend wasn't making any efforts to earn money off her mods in the past, then suddenly overnight decides to start trying because Steam said it was okay, doesn't make her any better than steam.

  There's this Led Zeppelin cover band called Led Zeppelin 2 who tours the country in a nice tour bus and everything and goes to nice venues

  I'm not sure how this would definitely destroy Nexus. I ahve a feeling primarily greedy low-lifers with little contributions will demand money for their mod, not true bleeding heart modders. If they wanted to the modding scene could've established a crude payment system long ago.

  No? Cover bands don't have original interpretations, they pick a band to emulate and make profits off 1:1 covers.
  Cover artists on the other hand do have original interpretations.
