Just started watching. Blew through season 1 last night. Kind of in love with it right now.

I started watching this recently as well, easily one of my favourite Animes right now.
Started on season 2 last night, kinda wondering how they are going to pull off the latest plan as they get more and more crazy each time. xD

Log Horizon starts out pretty fun but then quickly gets monotonous and pointless.

I don't see it that way. Shiroe is changing the world bit by bit, first in the city, then within his region, now they are aiming to changing Yamato as a whole. I don't want to spoil the plot but to me the stake keeps raising. Yeah maybe the arc about Akatsuki and the children are a bit boring but that's also part of this series's charm, it's not all about the main character and his women (ehem SAO) In fact I am glad Akatsuki got her own arc and developed as a character, can you imagine if she's actually swept to the background and just become this love sick harem girl like Asuna did? To me this series is not about an overarching plot of what happened and how to get back to the real world (and it shouldn't be, because it's done to death, I mean shit I remember this plot from Dungeon and Dragon cartoon in the 90s) This series is about the making of a world, it is literally history in the making, a story about a man with an ideal and how he shaped the world into a better place, the round table, League of Freedom cities... these are amazing to watch for me maybe because I want to admire a person like Shiore, a leader with the intellect to carry out change. Why did people vote for Obama in 2008 presidential election? Because people thought he would do what Shiore is doing for the Eldertale world, and that's amazing to watch.

It's definitely more of a strategy game approach as opposed to a hack and slash like SAO. I like Shiroe's character type a lot more than your typical hero-main character. The intellectual approach is what got me into this anime, I think. The love triangles and such are a little annoying and seem like a waste of time, to me, but most everything else is interesting. I also found the (lack of) panic of being trapped in a game underwhelming and would have liked to see more desperation, depression, and emotion/drama about being trapped (like SAO had). Still, this is a good anime.

There's more of panic and whatnot in season 2 and to be honest I don't really like it. The vibe of the story is different between SAO and LH, SAO is more serious, the stakes are higher and they are going for more gritty and dark story. LH is more light hearted (until like half way through season 2). I mean even the title log horizon is an expression for Shiore's desire to discover new horizon in this new land.
I kind of get what Brynn is saying now though, half way through season 2 it's one problem after another, the tone changed drastically. In first season Shiore always come through with a solution for the problem arises and in the process change the world for the better, but second season, it's one thing after another, problems keep piling up while Shiore is doing nothing to solve them. It feels like a super long build up for an arc but so far no pay off.

Honestly, along with what Yoorah said it's also just so tropey. Very hard to take the show seriously. (It's an issue I have with a lot of series though so I'm not trying to hate)

So I took a peak into Log Horizon. The first half of season 1 mostly surpasses Sword Art Online (sans the "we're all trapped", but not even the point of the game). Shiroe is a respectable "villain" and nothing like Kirito; he has little-to-no damage output for his class, but makes up for it with his cunning and strategy, and he doesn't suffer from traumatic problems. He lets nothing by him as he holds all the puppet strings.
The comedy was pretty good, and every other character had importance and not delegated to "harem". Overall I'd say the start has really piqued my interest.

I think that's to separate LH from SAO.

It's a pretty decent and amusing anime, season 2 got boring tho. Naotsugu is a beast.
