If you reeeeally new, you're probably in no position of a good weapon, so try to unlock commercing and get a Fomor Fire Wand, upgrade it to +4 chaincast (upgrade path 193). You'll need it as a base.
Also, keep that Beginner Ice Wand! Magic Weapon Mastery needs a magic weapon to gain the damage boost, and it costs costs 1 gold to repair it, those are your bare-hands now.
When you hit a million gold or two, or if you already have some spare, a Savage Fire Wand (315) would be better with blue upgrade stones.
I'm bringing up weapon first because it's a must, you need it to dish powerful damage on demand, and chaincast firebolt is that.
Skills you should be ranking, use the wiki to find out how to obtain them:
Always rank when available - These give a lot for their worth and are hard to grind, it would be better off to let them accumulate points and rank them whenever available
Critical Hit 1
Magic Weapon Mastery 1
Magic Mastery 1
Basic - The kit that'll get you your kit.
Firebolt 1 - Your shotgun.
Meditation A - Your shotgun needs a lot of MP, meditation will reduce the need of MP potions. You can go higher than rank A but the next books would take longer.
Learn Inspiration - This one too. A free mana potion.
Magic Mastery A - You'll need a boost of MP for inspiration, potion making, fireball, etc. Rank A is pretty efficient at that.
Learn Fusion Bolt - Something to do while waiting for spawns, also great for trash that you can one-shot. (Those damn goblins in Barri, you'll get to know them) If you don't have Icebolt F and Lightning Bolt F somehow, get it too.
Intermediate - Your kit.
Lightning bolt 1 - Firebolt spam is great, but where you're going, mobs will be weak at the start and firebolt is a waste on them. Lightning Rod costs less, deals more on 1st charge, and is much faster. It's your quick fingers.
Icebolt 1 - Icebolt not so much, but it's very AP efficient for the INT it gives and it'll increase your fusion bolt damage.
Musical Knowledge 9 - You don't have to run around with a lute, no. Well, I guess you could, but what I'm saying is, it's just a passive INT buff. Rank 9 is easy to obtain and gives a nice boost.
Composing 9 - That too.
Thunder F/9 - I personally prefer Fireball, but Thunder is a requirement to get Lightning Rod (which is amazing). Getting it is not so simple, but it's the easiest of the 3 intermediate skills. Rank 9 is very efficient, and it'll carry you through some hard dungeons, but you can keep it at F if you don't like the skill (I don't) and want Fireball instead.
Learn Snap Cast - If you haven't already, you need to learn it, upgrade your Beginner Ice Wand to +4 and extinct the fox race.
Learn Spellwalk - You'll get those annoying moments where you need to move your thunder soon enough.
MP source - At this point, you'll need to find a good source of MP. Either you grind your potion making to 9, or you spend gold on potions from NPCs/players. Where you're going, you'll need gold for repairs, so I'd go with the first option unless you're willing to sell NX.
Fireball - If you decided on Fireball instead of going forward with Thunder, get it here. And get that Savage Fire Wand if you haven't already.
Lightning Rod 9 - You'll love this one, but you'll need a staff for that. Try to find a decent Hermit's Staff if you decided you like Thunder, or go with a Trinity Staff if you prefer Fireball over it. Trinity is awful, but it'll save you a lot of money since you can Fireball with your Savage Fire Wand as opposed to requiring Hermit's Staff/a good Lightning Wand for Thunder.
Advanced - You.
Rank up your most used spells, finish up easy INT gain skills, find a better weapon, try out other magic skills, go a bit supportive with music, or even dwell into gunslinging, there's so many things to do. It's up to you where you want to take it.
Tips:
Sketch the arc lich, search it up on YouTube, very easy AP for beginners.
Do your daily shadow missions, and events that give AP (sheep wolf currently).
Saga I and II gives a total of 525 AP, get on that if you're short.
Work on your homestead every day. Just mine your ores, do Madoc's daily for another 2 (so you have 12) and then do Glenis's PTJ twice. You'll need a high ranked homestead to make mana herb patches.
Prof up your weapons at mana tunnels for unlimited mana. Now's a perfect time for it since there's a repair event.
Get into the market, figure out what sells and what shouldn't be picked up. Find interesting ways to make money, observe shops and demand. It's a hobby, and it'll help you make decent money for your magic career.
Crisis Escape is hilariously unbalanced and cheap against most mobs. I am cheap.
You can free yourself from the lock of using Thunder by casting a bolt. Don't run around waiting for the zap like me, don't do it, it looks silly.
Find buddies, Mabinogi is amazing with buddies.

There's barely any guides because how easy it is to obtain AP nowdays, so small mistakes don't hurt your character so much.
I learned that only recently you know, when I played years ago you used to get so little.
If you're below 1000 total level, you can reset your skills at Duncan for free, and the ranks you already achieved will allow instant ranking the next time you rank them.
This is good for experimenting of what kind of a mage you want to be or if you want to try out that random skill you're unsure of.

Tip: I highly suggest you start your adventures from Close Combat or Warrior talent. This talent and others has double training for critical hit and combat mastery. HP (or Health points) are added through combat mastery. [S]Only 10% of added hp through that skill gives cp[/S]. Besides, Warrior is a fundamental talent (well, it used to be until renovation project) in general and while you may or may not use it, its pro's overcome it's cons by a mile in my opinion.
Edit: ignore that sentence since it's irrelavent at this point. Post a new thread or ask through mabination small question thread if you need any details later on.
