It's already dead.
Summer does nothing but reduce the amount of active users on Nation.

The concept of forums is dead. Social media is doing a good job murdering them.

Don't think the concept is dead at all. But it's popularity may be shrinking. Social media and forums both have their own strengths and weaknesses. You could never redo something like TWC as a social media group.

It doesn't help that DevCat is doing the bare minimum needed to keep a 10 year old game alive, which means less overall site traffic. I don't know how people like araria/juju/phunkie stuck around as long as they did. This part of the community has always been ambiguous to me.
I don't expect Facebook/Twitter/etc to fully overtake forums. Those websites are full of YouTube comment-level trash about baby's first words and mix tapes.

Forums generally attract people interested in much more structured information and discussions. But in this age of mobile devices and people who just "want it to work", and who just want to play the game, they have absolutely no reason to sign up to a forum, especially one like mabination that doesn't force you to log in to view the content. All they need to do is google search something about mabinogi, Nation probably will be high up on the results list, the read what they need to read and get out.
Meanwhile on social media like twitter or facebook everyone already has an account, is perm-logged in on all their devices, and can participate with quick, pointless comments with near zero effort. They're pretty much monopolizing quick online interactions/discussions, while forums are holding their own when it comes to in-depth content that much, much fewer people care to participate in.

I actually blame Reddit.
There's a subreddit for everything which is making forums less and less active.
Shame too because Reddit is such a shitty site.

Reddit is an example of big social media.
Pretty much any huge site where most people have an account, and anyone can start groups/categories for anything. It renders dedicated communities useless for anything except the more detailed stuff.
You're not really going to find a 20 paragraph essay with photos and videos on facebook, but people who want to ask a 2-sentence question or quickly sell an item or do "spam" discussions most forums wouldn't allow are going to flock to social media and leave forums in the dust.

Agreed. Forums offer community,in my opinion, that things like reddit dont. Im sure the forums will rise again or whatever though. Just gotta believe! We are master race. Darn I wanted to put a bad upvote joke into this.....

Well, if Newsgroups and imageboards are still alive, so will forums remain alive.
