Random Skype Video Message

This is an archive of the mabination.com forums which were active from 2010 to 2018. So one of my friends (on Mabination if I might add, I won't say who) unintentionally sent this to me. I clicked the link but I didn't download whatever was on it.

Shortly afterward, my skype account suddenly sent the exact same message to a whole bunch of people on my friend list without my input. The person who sent this to me claimed this happened to them as well.

What the fuck just happened? I did a scan with Malwarebytes and nothing came up. I also changed my skype password.

Antivirus are useless. Virus/malware developers are always ahead.
The best antivirus is your brain, so next time you know not to click weird stuff.

I would now suggest you not log into any services you use on that computer until you've formatted it. My policy for anything like this is not to mess around, nuke it and start clean.

Use another, known clean PC or device to change all your passwords ASAP and do not use those passwords on that PC until it's formatted.

Also, get in the habbit of having regular backups. You can use this awesome thing: http://www.veeam.com/endpoint-backup-free.html
Just get a external USB drive or something that it can do backups onto.
If you had that in place you could roll back to yesterday, or to a few hours before you clicked the link depending on your configuration.

Unfortunately I don't have another clean PC; my family aren't going to let me use theirs.

I only clicked the link and it asked me to put my password, which I did. Some people I've asked around just says it compromises my Skype account and that's it.

So far I've noticed nothing out of the ordinary on my computer, even after a restart.

Well if you find any concrete info on what it was and it confirms it's only a skype compromise you're lucky.

Also for future reference, if skype messages you saying you received a photo or what not ONLY click on it if it comes from https://api.asm.skype.com

EDIT: If its any consolation, this seems exactly like the old MSN trick that did the same thing.

It is unlikely you got a virus, but rather they used your info to make use of multiple logins the client now supports to send the messages to others. Changing your details SHOULD be enough but as Osay says you should try and find out more info just to be sure.

They added it, I've left multiple video messages. It shows up as an option if you try to call somebody and they don't answer.

Yeah, you gave them that password, that's not the skype website. The skype website is skype.com, not skyperesource.com, anybody can register a domain name with the word "skype" in it and some groups are pretty crafty at making legit-looking links.

As said above, change all your passwords just to be safe.
Especially your e-mail password. Do not neglect that one.

this happened before and the message was "lol is this you" and it did the exact same thing
this is why i don't click messages from people i haven't talked to recently
