tend to be overdramatic and at times forced.
For example, Yuuji Kazami from Fruits of Grisaia...

and who can forget anything by Key? Little Busters, Clannad, Rewrite, etc. And basically anything centered around Mundane Life. I kind of get why people Like Katawa Shoujo. It was simple. Relatable. In these visual novels, you can possibly imagine the tribulations these characters went through. You're not suppose to. You can't possibly understand the suffering, which more or less ostracizes you to a position of sympathy or apathy. They're not even real people anymore, they're just idols you're suppose to feel sorry for.

That's most anime or manga in general, they make it forcefully dramatic to make it more 'exciting' a lot of people aren't picky and just don't care so it becomes an extremely overused trope and one of the bigger crutches they use to lean a lot of stuff on that they make.

Have an average backstory, everybody sympathizes with the dullness of one's life, then call you dull. Have an overexciting backstory, you're a trope.
You just can't win, so just make sure that you don't lose.
