I'm not arguing that, in fact that'd probably be the way I'd upgrade my future Crossbow unless I get higher than A grade somehow.
My point being, if you're a perfectionist, and want to get that tiny 2 max, you'd have to opt in for a higher grade Crossbow, which people'd try to get anyway I assume.

Functionally, they're pretty much equal. The biggest difference between the two is the added mobility granted by crossbows and costs involved. If you've already got a Bhafel combo, stick with it. If you want a cheesy end-game weapon, get the crossbow.

What constitutes light vs heavy skills? I'm guessing magnum and crash are heavy while support and AR are light?

Crash Shot and Magnum Shot are the only heavy ranged skills. Heavy skills reach 99% accuracy in a max of 8 seconds and are only influenced by Final Shot.
All other skills which aim are light ranged skills. Light skills reach 99% accuracy in a max of 5 seconds and are influenced by vivace, attack speed set, crossbow's hidden bonus, ranged attack's aim speed bonus, Final Shot, etc.

You got 50 bal right there, don't you only need like 600 dex to get 30 bal from dex and cap to 80? Idk what I'm missing that ironwoman can see but there is no damage loss and balance is fine.

It does for shuriken and guns and those are ranged weapons.
I don't have any bow that doesn't have 40%+ balance and neither do NPCs, so can't test, but don't see why not when it affects everything else even when it's not melee weapons.
Even if it does not, 20% balance for a mid roll still makes it pretty manageable.
Also those upgrades are going off of wiki data, and since the middle upgrades all give the same 1 max there should be no reason to go for one with higher balance penalty as opposed to the one with the least if the information on wiki is accurate.

Combat Mastery increases the balance of all weapons sans bows, crossbows, and atatls.
The important thing to take out of this is that unlike damn near every other weapon, the Celtic Royal Crossbow's balance is a concern and should be monitored.

^oh, sucks to suck for bows/atlatl/crossbow then on that end.
Still, while it's fair to monitor it it's not as BIG of a deal as first proposed if you can just spam bowstring winding 1 since it has the same max as 2 and 3. Or god forbid swap one of them for the balance upgrade.
With a 20+ balance weapon developed archers should be more than fine, while others can use swarming x2.
