I remember very early on in the Oculus Rift's life, some Japanese people got their hands on them and did what creative Japanese people do best. >_>; The otaku wearing the unit looked like he was really enjoying the experience. e_e;
I doubt that that industry will take advantage of advanced (and expensive) units like the Rift, however. It would make a lot more sense to focus on Cardboard-grade units that make use of the ubiquity of smartphones. There already are companies that sell Cardboard-type headsets, except made from plastic, have a head strap and whatnot, but still much cheaper than a Rift. I think units like that will become quite common in the near future as devs take advantage of VR.
As for the OnePlus Cardboard, they said they sold out of their 30,000 units stock in less than 12 hours. That's kind of crazy.
It's that plastic one we are looking to head towards actually. We do have one of those.

Does it actually work or it feels like wearing something a first grader made in arts and crafts?

Eh.. it works. But it's not as amazing as I thought it would be. The lenses are not adjustable, so the centre of the picture looks slightly blurry while the edges are sharper. You also don't get any immersion since the unit doesn't fit flush against your face (it's a cardboard brick, so..) But the 3D effect works well enough and flying around in Google Earth is fairly cool. I haven't tried any of the interesting VR apps out there yet, so I imagine I'll have more fun with it later. \o/
My guess is that those plastic manufactured units for ~$20 are a significant upgrade over the Cardboard (so don't buy a Cardboard for like $10--get something semi-decent).
This made me want the Oculus Rift consumer unit to be released faster. :0

Trust me, they are. I put one on when they were showing people in our office the device. Amazing quality in the one video I watched with it.
I was going to link to the free cardboard googles site we have (It's live now), but I changed my mind. It's a bit too risky due to our tie in with our other product that probably isn't suitable for these forums.

Well it's been being talked about a lot lately as we did throw a wide media net out on it xD
We're in the New York Post, not to mention a few other mainstream media sources has been reporting on us.
I actually got to box up the goggles to be shipped out in the last shipment.

Sounds about right. We just had to order more to ship out. That's going to be a fun process boxing those up as we're all doing them by hand at the moment *sigh*
